We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel approach to study sliding friction by the use of 3D multiscale coupling techniques. We highlight the difficulties of using multiscale schemes that couple molecular dynamics (MD) with finite elements to perfor ...

We investigate the friction of deformable bodies, with nano-scale self-affine fractal rough surfaces, at the atomic scale using molecular dynamics. Different temperatures (0-400 K) are studied, while roughness and applied load are changed. During sliding, ...

In materials, the evolution of crack surfaces is intimately linked with the self-contact occurring between them. The developed contact forces not only mitigate the effect of stress concentration at crack tip but also contribute sig- nificantly to the trans ...

We study a regularisation of Coulomb's friction law on the propagation of local slip at an interface between a deformable and a rigid solid. This regularisation, which was proposed based on experimental observations, smooths the effect of a sudden jump in ...

A numerical analysis of mechanical frictionless contact between rough self-affine elastic manifolds was carried out. It is shown that the lower cutoff wave number in surface spectra is a key parameter controlling the representativity of the numerical model ...

We present a robust method to obtain the displacement field of a dislocation core, which is one of the building blocks for the development of a direct multiscale method coupling an atomistic domain to a discrete dislocation dynamics engine in 3D (e.g. CADD ...

We present a 3D multiscale coupling method to address sliding contact simulations at the nanoscale. The components of the model are a molecular dynamics engine, a finite element program and a coupling scheme. We consider the normal loading of a rough (frac ...

The spatial distribution of regions that lie above contours of constant height through a self-affine surface is studied as a function of the Hurst exponent H. If the surface represents a landscape, these regions correspond to islands. When the surface repr ...

We present a multiscale coupling method to address contact problems. The components of the model are a molecular dynamics engine, a finite element program and a coupling scheme. We validate the approach, first on Hertzian contact and then with a rough surf ...

We present a multiscale coupling method to address contact problems. The components of the model are a molecular dynamics engine, a finite element program and a coupling scheme. We validate the approach on an Hertzian contact. Various measures are provided ...

We carry out a statistically meaningful study on self-affine rough surfaces in elastic frictionless non-adhesive contact. We study the evolution of the true contact area under increasing squeezing pressure from zero up to full contact, which enables us to ...

The Discrete element method (DEM) is a robust numerical tool for simulating crack propagation and wear in granular materials. However, the computational cost associated with DEM hinders its applicability to large domains. To address this limitation, we emp ...

Une approche par équations intégrales volumiques du problème de contact élastoplastique périodique est présentée. Elle repose sur la formulation des fonctions de Green nécessaires au calcul des opérateurs intégraux directement dans l’espace de Fourier. Cel ...

We show that concurrent atomistic/continuum displacement-coupling methods are inherently unstable in the context of fully dynamic problems at finite temperature. The fundamental origin of the instability is the displacement coupling of two material descrip ...
