Various instruments allowing the measurements of bottom deposits of fine sediments exist. Different techniques are developed in order to suit diverse operating conditions. The present study considers two high-precision instruments, namely, an electrical re ...

Reservoirs represent an important source of energy that should be preserved and sustained. However, the lifetime of reservoirs is being reduced due to natural processes such as sedimentation. To face this problem, different sediment mitigation techniques a ...

During floods, sediments are transported from watersheds into reservoirs, slowly decreasing water volumes and this leading to economic losses. Thus, in the long term, sedimentation endangers reservoirs’ sustainability. Sediments can also block low-level hy ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

The papers present three innovative solutions for fine sediment manage- ments in seasonal reservoirs, which are at different stages of maturity. Operational reservoir stirring using jet-like inflows may facilitate sediment routing, at no addi- tional cost ...

Sediment yield into reservoirs was underestimated during the design of dams in the past. As a result, today, reservoir sedimentation is endangering the sustainability of dams. Moreover, the obstruction of rivers hinders their capacity to transport sediment ...

Turbidity currents are the main source of suspended sediment transport in reservoirs and thus one of the main causes of sedimentation. One of the techniques used to avoid reservoir sedimentation is through venting of turbidity currents. In the framework of ...

A particular aspect of the nonstationary nature of intermittent rainfall is investigated. It manifests itself in the fact that the average rain rate varies with the distance to the surrounding dry areas. The authors call this fundamental link between the r ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss-French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its inauguration, the operation of the four spillway gates was responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. Thus, a hybrid modelling was pe ...

Increasing the flexibility of hydropower allows operators to produce at optimal time ranges, not only dependent on the demand flow but also on the price trends. However, the possibility to improve hydropower flexibility can be hindered when assets are mana ...

Turbidity currents may be a relevant lever to manage the accumu-lation of fine sediments in reservoirs. In this paper, we propose to show how two different numerical codes simulate the propagation of turbidity currents. Telemac 3D and Ansys CFX 17.1 solver ...

The lifetime and efficiency of dams is endangered by the process of sedimentation. To ensure the sustainable use of reservoirs, many sediment management techniques exist, among which venting of turbidity currents. Nevertheless, a number of practical questi ...

Venting of turbidity currents is known as an efficient measure to prevent reservoir sedimentation and is applied in many reservoirs globally. It has several economic and ecological advantages compared with other evacuation methods. In the literature, numer ...

Uncontrolled scour is affecting multiple mobile dams. The plunge pool of the Chancy-Pougny barrage, located on the Rhone River bordering France and Switzerland, has recently been reported to develop in a potentially unfavourable direction after almost 100 ...

Reservoir sedimentation is gaining growing attention as dams are aging, due to economic and environmental consequences. Venting of turbidity currents is one of many sediment management techniques, highly recommended when water is in shortage. The venting o ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a worldwide problem affecting sustainable storage use as well as sediment transport downstream of dams. Various techniques are applied for sediment mitigation, among which, venting of turbidity currents. This paper reviews, discu ...

A stochastic rainfall simulator based on the concept of “dry drift” is proposed. It is characterized by a new and nonstationary representation of rainfall in which the average rain rate (in log-space) depends on the distance to the closest surrounding dry ...

Reservoir sedimentation is an issue that dam operators are increasingly facing as dams are aging. Not only does it reduce a reservoir's capacity but it also affects its outlet structures such as bottom outlets and powerhouse intakes. Sedimentation may also ...

Hydropower operations can cause hydropeaking particularly in the case of pumped storage systems located in mountainous regions. Due to the rapidly varying discharge conditions, hydropeaking leads to several problems such as stranding of fishes and inverteb ...
