It is necessary to take into account the micro discretization of natural rock when studying its macroscopic failure behavior. This requirement has resulted in renewed and increased interest in the discrete or framework/lattice numerical modeling techniques ...

This paper presents an analytical study on normally incident wave propagation across a joint set. Combined with the displacement discontinuity method (DDM), the virtual wave source method (VWSM) is adopted to take account of multiple wave reflections among ...

A MLS-based lattice spring model is presented for numerical modeling of elasticity of materials. In the model, shear springs between particles are introduced in addition to normal springs. However, the unknowns contain only particle displacements but no pa ...

Particle manifold method (PMM) is a new extension of the numerical manifold method (NMM). PMM uses a mathematical cover system to describe the motion and deformation of a particle-based physical domain. By introducing the concept of particle into NMM, PMM ...

Rock joints are often filled with weak medium, for example, saturated clay or sand, of viscoelastic nature. Their effects on wave propagation can be modelled as displacement and stress discontinuity conditions. The viscoelastic behaviour of the filled join ...

Joints are important mechanical and hydrological features of rock masses, and they can greatly affect wave propagation and attenuation across jointed rock masses. Joints often contain liquid, and the presence of liquid will change the mechanical behaviors ...

A numerical manifold method (NMM) for plane micropolar elasticity is proposed in this paper to consider the microstructure influence of materials. First, the basic formulations of plane micropolar elasticity are briefly introduced. Then, the equations of s ...

A validation study of the distinct lattice spring model (DLSM) for wave propagation problems is performed. DLSM is a microstructure-based numerical model, which is meshless and has advantages in modelling dynamic problems where stress wave propagation is i ...

The distinct lattice spring model (DLSM) is a newly developed numerical tool for modeling rock dynamics problems, i.e. dynamic failure and wave propagation. In this paper, parallelization of DLSM is presented. With the development of parallel computing tec ...

A micro-macro and continuum-discontinuum coupled model and corresponding computer codes are developed in this thesis for rock dynamics study. Firstly, a new micromechanical model for describing the elastic continuum based on the underlying microstructure o ...

A full rate-dependent cohesive law is implemented in the distinct lattice spring method (DLSM) to investigate the dynamic fracturing behavior of brittle materials. Both the spring ultimate deformation and spring strength are dependent on the spring deforma ...

A truly meshless method based on the weighted least-squares (WLS) approximation and the method of point collocation is proposed to solve heat conduction problems in heterogeneous media. It is shown that, in the case of strong heterogeneity, accurate and sm ...
