Modern scientific applications consume massive volumes of data produced by computer simulations. Such applications require new data management capabilities in order to scale to terabyte-scale data volumes [32, 10]. The most common way to discretize the app ...

It is increasingly common for domain scientists to use computational tools to build and simulate spatial models of the phenomena they are studying. The spatial models they build are more and more detailed as well as dense and are consequently difficult to ...

The need for high availability and performance in data management systems has been fueling a long running interest in database replication from both academia and industry. However, academic groups often attack replication problems in isolation, overlooking ...

The common "one size does not fit all" paradigm isolates transactional and analytical workloads into separate, specialized database systems. Operational data is periodically replicated to a data warehouse for analytics. Competitiveness of enterprises today ...

Modern state-of-the-art database systems are designed around a single data storage layout. This is a fixed decision that drives the whole architectural design of a database system, i.e., row-stores, column-stores. However, none of those choices is a univer ...

During an instruction miss a processor is unable to fetch instructions. The more frequent instruction misses are the less able a modern processor is to find useful work to do and thus performance suffers. Online transaction processing (OLTP) suffers from h ...

The typical enterprise data architecture consists of several actively updated data sources (e.g., NoSQL systems, data warehouses), and a central data lake such as HDFS, in which all the data is periodically loaded through ETL processes. To simplify query p ...

Nowadays, massive amounts of point cloud data can be collected thanks to advances in data acquisition and processing technologies like dense image matching and airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanning. With the increase in volume and precision ...

Designing scalable transaction processing systems on modern multicore hardware has been a challenge for almost a decade. The typical characteristics of transaction processing workloads lead to a high degree of unbounded communication on multicores for conv ...

As data collections become larger and larger, data loading evolves to a major bottleneck. Many applications already avoid using database systems, e.g., scientific data analysis and social networks, due to the complexity and the increased data-to-query time ...

Query optimizers depend heavily on statistics representing column distributions to create efficient query plans. In many cases, though, statistics are outdated or non-existent, and the process of refreshing statistics is very expensive, especially for ad-h ...

To benefit from the cloud’s higher elasticity and price-efficiency, most modern data-lake engines support S3-like cloud object storage (COS) services as their optional or preferred underlying storage. Meanwhile, the widespread column stores, such as Parque ...

Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) deployments are migrating from on-premise to cloud settings in order to exploit the elasticity of cloud infrastructure which allows them to adapt to workload variations. However, cloud adaptation comes at the cost of re ...

With large-scale simulations of increasingly detailed models and improvement of data acquisition technologies, massive amounts of data are easily and quickly created and collected. Traditional systems require indexes to be built before analytic queries can ...

In the last few years NAND flash storage has become more and more popular as price per GB and capacity both improve at exponential rates. Flash memory offers significant benefits compared to magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs) and DBMSs are highly likely to u ...

Efficient spatial joins are pivotal for many applications and particularly important for geographical information systems or for the simulation sciences where scientists work with spatial models. Past research has primarily focused on disk-based spatial jo ...

Enterprises collect data in large volumes and leverage them to drive numerous concurrent decisions and business processes. Their teams deploy multiple applications that often operate concurrently on the same data and infrastructure but have widely differen ...

A database system maintains a feature set of a modern database system while operating directly on raw data files. Systems may use an adaptive indexing mechanism that maintains positional information to provide efficient access to raw data files, a flexible ...

Modern hardware is abundantly parallel and increasingly heterogeneous. The numerous processing cores have non-uniform access latencies to the main memory and to the processor caches, which causes variability in the communication costs. Unfortunately, datab ...

Over the past decade, new solid state storage technologies, with flash being the most mature one, have become increasingly popular. Such technologies store data durably, and can alleviate many handicaps of hard disk drives (HDDs). Nonetheless, they have ve ...
