We present a numerical study of three fully baffled L-mode TCV discharges with three different values of the outer strike-point major radius/total flux expansion, showing that the beneficial effect of large strike point radius is partially screened in thes ...

To reliably predict the distribution of heat and particle fluxes at the target plates of tokamaks, a comprehensive understanding of turbulence throughout the entire Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) is imperative. This study examines divertor turbulence systematicall ...

Filamentary structures, also known as blobs, are a prominent feature of turbulence and transport at the edge of magnetically confined plasmas. They cause cross-field particle and energy transport and are, therefore, of interest in tokamak physics and, more ...

This paper shows experimental results from the TCV tokamak that indicate plasma-molecule interactions involving D2+

The Multi-Spectral Imaging system is a new diagnostic that captures simultaneous spectrally filtered images from a common line of sight while maintaining a large etendue and high throughput. Imaging several atomic line intensities simultaneously may enable ...

In magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion the exhaust of heat and particles from the core remains a major challenge. Heat and particles leaving the core are transported via open magnetic field lines to a region of the reactor wall, called the divertor. ...

The aim of this work is to provide an understanding of detachment at TCV with emphasis on analysis of the Balmer line emission. A new Divertor Spectroscopy System has been developed for this purpose. Further development of Balmer line analysis techniques h ...

In situ, two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir probe measurements across a large part of the TCV outer divertor are reported in L-mode discharges with and without divertor baffles. This provides detailed insights into time averaged profiles, particle fluxes, and f ...

A first set of divertor gas baffles has recently been installed in the TCV tokamak. In order to explore the physics determining the benefits and limitations of divertor baffling and to guide the design of a possible second generation of baffles, the effect ...

TCV’s operating regime with an X-point radiator (XPR) has been broadened by changing the magnetic geometry. XPRs have properties that could make them an attractive power exhaust solution for fusion reactors. These include the conversion of a high fraction ...

In this paper we present a novel algorithm to extract the optical plasma boundary and radiation front for detached divertor plasmas. We show that reliable detection of the divertor leg and radiation front is possible using lightweight image processing tool ...

Plasma-molecular interactions generate molecular ions which react with the plasma and contribute to detachment through molecular activated recombination (MAR), reducing the ion target flux, and molecular activated dissociation (MAD), both of which create e ...

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinat ...

Obtaining acceptable conditions at the divertor targets of a next-step fusion experiment based on the tokamak concept is expected to be particularly challenging because of the small predicted value of the plasma power exhaust channel width. An increased co ...

Nitrogen seeded detachment has been achieved in the tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) in alternative divertor configurations (ADCs), namely X-divertor and X-point target, with and without baffles in H-mode plasmas with high core confinement. Both ADCs ...

The effect of divertor closure and nitrogen seeding on the detachment process has been studied by performing 2D numerical simulations of tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) H-mode divertor scenarios with the SOLEDGE3X-EIRENE edge plasma transport code. ...

The aim of this paper is to present a signal processing algorithm that, applied to the raw Locked Mode signal, allows us to obtain a disruption indicator in principle exploitable on different tokamaks. A common definition of such an indicator for different ...

Evidence that density shoulder broadening is dependent on high main-chamber neutral density is presented. Shoulder broadening does notoccur when the sources for main-chamber neutrals are minimized using divertor baffles and wide gaps to the first wall (sim ...

Self-consistent full-size turbulent-transport simulations of the divertor and scrape-off-layer (SOL) of existing tokamaks have recently become feasible. This enables the direct comparison of turbulence simulations against experimental measurements. In this ...

The mechanism for blob generation in a toroidal magnetized plasma is investigated using time-resolved measurements of two-dimensional structures of electron density, temperature, and plasma potential. The blobs are observed to form from a radially elongate ...
