We studied the magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional (q-1D) ladder subsystem of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (SCCO) using Cu L-3-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). By comparing momentum-resolved RIXS spectra with high (x = 12.2) and without ( ...

Co-Zn-Mn chiral cubic magnets display versatile magnetic skyrmion phases, including equilibrium phases stable far above and far below room temperature, and the facile creation of robust far-from-equilibrium skyrmion states. In this system, compositional di ...

Helimagnetic materials are identified as promising for novel spintronic applications. Since helical spin order is manifested as a compromise of competing magnetic exchange interactions, its emergence is limited by unique constraints imposed by the crystall ...

We present the detailed design and performance simulations of BIFROST, a multiplexing indirect neutron time-of-flight spectrometer at the European Spallation Source. The instrument allows a neutron bandwidth of Δλ = 1.74 Å to reach the sample. The polychro ...

Neutron diffraction is used to probe the (H,T) phase diagram of magnetoelectric (ME) LiNiPO4 for magnetic fields along the c axis. At zero field the Ni spins order in two antiferromagnetic phases. One has commensurate (C) structures and general ordering ve ...

We present experiments on the magnetic-field-dependent thermal transport in the spin-1/2 ladder system (C5H12N)(2)CuBr4. The thermal conductivity kappa(B) is only weakly affected by the field-induced transitions between the gapless Luttinger-liquid state r ...

The anhydrous alum KTi(SO4)(2), where the Ti3+ (d(1), S = 1/2) ions form an anisotropic triangular lattice, has been prepared by a new hydrothermal route and characterized by magnetic susceptibility and neutron scattering measurements. Contrary to expectat ...

We present a systematic study of the crystal-field interactions in the LiRF4 (R = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) family of rare-earth magnets. Using detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have been able to quantify the transition energies and wave ...

We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF4. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0 ...

Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like topological spin textures often observed to form a triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal in structurally chiral magnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently, beta-Mn structure-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys were ident ...

We show that the observed ferromagnetic behavior of ZnO lightly doped with Mn coincides with the presence of MnO nanoparticles, whereas cluster-free Mn doped ZnO behaves paramagnetically. This conclusion is reached by a study of the structural and magnetic ...

Transmission through a (100)-oriented single crystal of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) was studied at frequencies of 0.485-0.765 THz with a continuous-wave source and in the temperature range of 30-350 K as a function of polarization angle. The fine splitting of ...

We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba3ZnIr2O9 is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba3ZnIr2O9 with Ir5+ (5d(4)) ions and strong spin-orbi ...

In the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg model, topological point defects known as spin hedgehogs behave as emergent magnetic monopoles, i.e., quantized sources and sinks of gauge fields that couple strongly to conduction electrons, and cause unconventiona ...

We present a new method of Ba2MgWO6 single crystal synthesis that allows to grow larger crystals using a BaCl2 and MgCl2 flux. Difficulties to grow single crystals of a size suitable for macroscopic material property measurements caused the majority of cha ...

We investigate the monoclinic distortion that occurs at 4.7 GPa at room temperature in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland model quantum magnet SrCu2(BO3)(2) as a function of pressure and temperature by means of powder and single crystal angle dispersive syn ...

Numerous contemporary investigations in condensed matter physics are devoted to high temperature (high-T-c) cuprate superconductors. Despite its unique effulgence among research subjects, the enigma of the high-T-c mechanism still persists. One way to adva ...

The magnetic critical scattering in Sr2IrO4 has been characterized using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) both below and above the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T-N. The order parameter critical exponent below TN is foun ...

We present the experimental phase diagram of LiHoxEr1-xF4, a dilution series of dipolar-coupled model magnets. The phase diagram was determined using a combination of ac susceptibility and neutron scattering. Three unique phases in addition to the Ising fe ...

At the liquid-gas phase transition in water, the density has a discontinuity at atmospheric pressure; however, the line of these first-order transitions defined by increasing the applied pressure terminates at the critical point(1), a concept ubiquitous in ...
