We present high-resolution triple-axis neutron scattering studies of the high-temperature superconductor La1.88Sr0.12CuO4 (Tc=27 K). The temperature dependence of the low-energy incommensurate magnetic fluctuations reveals distinctly glassy features. The g ...

Double-negative refractive index materials have attracted sustained experimental and theoretical interest because they can display a range of surprising optical phenomena, including negative Doppler shifts and perfect lensing. Double-negative indexes have ...

The strength of the electron-phonon coupling parameter and its evolution throughout a solid's phase diagram often determines phenomena such as superconductivity, charge- and spin-density waves. Its experimental determination relies on the ability to distin ...

An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator a ...

Co3Sn2S2 has recently been predicted to be a Weyl semimetal in which magnetic order is key to its behavior as a topological material. Here, we report unpolarized neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry measurements, supported by magnetization ...

Magnetism has been predicted to occur in systems in which dipolar interactions dominate exchange. We present neutron scattering, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility data for LiErF4, establishing it as a model dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet with pla ...

A Muon Spin Rotation (mu+SR) study was conducted to investigate the magnetic properties of SrCu2(BO3)(2) (SCBO) as a function of temperature/pressure. Measurements in zero field and transverse field confirm the absence of long range magnetic order at high ...

The detection of inelastically scattered soft x-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of x-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at sy ...

A 1D, end-on azido- and phenoxo-bridged, coordination polymer, Cu-2(mu-NAPPR)(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2) (1), (NAPPR(2-) = 1,3-bis(naphthylideneimino) propane dianion), was synthesized and characterized. The 1D branched-chain is built of two types of slightly di ...

Exploiting additional degrees of freedom in solid-state materials may be the most-promising solution when approaching the quantum limit of Moore's law for the conventional electronic industry. Recently discovered topologically nontrivial spin textures, sky ...

The spin- and charge-density-wave order parameters of the itinerant antiferromagnet chromium are directly measured with nonresonant x-ray diffraction as the system is driven toward its quantum critical point with high pressure using a diamond anvil cell. T ...

The topic of data storage, traceability, and data use and reuse in the years following experiments is becoming an important topic in Europe and across the world. Many scientific communities are striving to create open data by the FAIR principles. This is a ...

High quality centimeter size single crystals of Bi(Cu1-xZnx)(2)PO6 (x=0% 1% 5%) have been successfully grown by the Travelling Solvent Floating Zone (TSFZ) technique The crystals were grown with a rate of 1 mm/h in a gas mixture of 20% O-2 in Ar Characteri ...

A microscopic characterisation of the phase transitions associated with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in manganese perovskite oxides is a very important ingredient in the quest of understanding its underlying mechanism. Scanning tunneling microscopy (ST ...

The transition temperature T-c of unconventional superconductivity is often tunable. For a monolayer of FeSe, for example, the sweet spot is uniquely bound to titanium-oxide substrates. By contrast for La2-xSrxCuO4 thin films, such substrates are sub-optim ...

We present first-principles calculations of the dynamic susceptibility in strained and doped ferromagnetic MnBi using time-dependent density functional theory. In spite of being a metal, MnBi exhibits signatures of strong correlation and a proper descripti ...

A comprehensive study of the static and dynamic critical properties of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet MnPS3 is presented. The relatively large spin S=5/2 of the Mn ions ensure predominantly classical behavior, and the compound is believed to be ...

We report the observation by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) of a magnetic helical structure confined in a thin film of the chiral lattice magnet FeGe. Twofold magnetic Bragg spots appearing below the magnetic transition temperature indicate the form ...

The recent discovery of topologically nontrivial behavior in Co3Sn2S2 stimulated a notable interest in this itinerant ferromagnet (T-C = 174 K). The exact magnetic state remains ambiguous, with several reports indicating the existence of a second transitio ...

When viewed as an elementary particle, the electron has spin and charge. When binding to the atomic nucleus, it also acquires an angular momentum quantum number corresponding to the quantized atomic orbital it occupies. Even if electrons in solids form ban ...
