This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign designed specifically to investigate unexpected and unwanted failures observed during the quasi-static and fatigue tensile loading of structural adhesives. Simple finite element models were also d ...

Fracture in the complex balsa cores of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich beams was analyzed. The cores were composed of high- and low-density balsa layers separated by a circular adhesive interface or FRP arch. The balsa layers were cut from panels w ...

The effect of the stress ratio (R = sigma(min)/sigma(max)) on the fatigue behavior of (+/- 45)(2s) angle-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated by comparing their mechanical, thermal, and optical properties under the stress ratio of 0.5 with ...

Different factors such as age, location of timber within the tree, structural imperfections, load history such as wind and snow etc. can affect the material properties of timber taken from the same species, and grown in the same geographical location and l ...

Genetic programming is used in this paper for modeling the fatigue life of several fiber-reinforced composite material systems. It is shown that if the genetic programming tool is adequately trained, it can produce theoretical predictions that compare favo ...

This work proposes a transfer learning-based encoder-decoder framework to predict the relationship between loading conditions and residual stiffness in carbon fiber reinforced composites and adhesives. The encoder, built from a Convolutional Neural Network ...

A general constitutive equation was established using the theory of viscoelasticity in order to consider the interaction of the time- and cyclic-dependent mechanical properties of laminated composites. This equation was solved for two specific loading patt ...

Investigations of the fatigue performance of composite materials have accompanied their introduction in several engineering domains since the 1950s. An abundance of publications have emerged dealing with the experimental investigation of the fatigue perfor ...

A 3D printed bio-composite removable connection system for bamboo space structures is introduced in this paper. The system consists of a removable clipping connection for raw bamboo structures, adapted to the European market. The use of parametric design a ...

In order to optimize sandwich structures, core materials of different density and thus different stiffness and strength are often combined. The material discontinuities at joints of dissimilar core materials may lead to abrupt changes of the shear angles a ...

An artificial neural network has been proved to be a sufficient tool for modelling fatigue life of multidirectional composite laminates made of GFRP composite materials and tested under constant amplitude loading patterns. Modelling efficiency of the netwo ...

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have shown desirable properties in aerospace, automotive, and construction industries. Focusing on the latter and in the context of strengthening existing structures, CFRP composites are typically bonded to ...

This work investigates the quasi-static, low-cycle and fatigue behavior of hybrid glass/ultra-high modulus carbon (GC) and low modulus/ /high modulus carbon (CC) fiber composites. These pseudo-ductile unidirectional interlayer hybrids are a new type of com ...

The early-age mechanical property development of structural adhesives during low temperature curing is critical for the outdoor construction of engineering structures, such as bridges or buildings. Construction of these structures is also carried out durin ...

The development of new adhesives has allowed to expand the application of bonding into the most diverse industrial fields. This review article presents the commonly used experimental methods for the investigation of mechanical performance of adhesively bon ...

This paper questions the recommendation regarding the use of standard specimen geometries, (Type I, Type II, and Type IV), for estimating the tensile quasi-static and fatigue properties of structural epoxy adhesives. The work presents results from an exper ...

The tensile behavior of adhesively-bonded double-lap joints composed of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced adherends and an epoxy adhesive was investigated under temperatures ranging between -35°C and 60°C. The load-elongation response was influenced primari ...

Thin webs of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) girders are sensitive to shear buckling, which can be considered an in-plane biaxial compression-tension buckling problem, according to the rotated stress field theory. An extensive experimental study was ...

The mixed-mode fracture behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer joints was experimentally investigated using asymmetric mixed-mode bending specimens. The crack propagated along paths outside the symmetry plane and, therefore, ...

The total light transmittance of hand lay-up glass fiber-reinforced polymer laminates for building construction was investigated with a view to two architectural applications: translucent load-bearing structures and the encapsulation of photovoltaic cells ...
