The most successful systems for "big data'' processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate, or middleware, upon which to build data-centric distribute ...

Functional programming (FP) is regularly touted as the way forward for bringing parallel, concurrent, and distributed programming to the mainstream. The popularity of the rationale behind this viewpoint (immutable data transformed by function application) ...

Scala-Virtualized extends the Scala language to better support hosting embedded DSLs. Scala is an expressive language that provides a flexible syntax, type-level computation using implicits, and other features that facilitate the development of em- bedded ...

Message-based concurrency using actors has the potential to scale from multicore processors to distributed systems. However, several challenges remain until actor-based programming can be applied on a large scale. First, actor implementations must be effic ...

There is an impedance mismatch between message-passing concurrency and virtual machines, such as the JVM. VMs usually map their threads to heavyweight OS processes. Without a lightweight process abstraction, users are often forced to write parts of concurr ...

Programming systems incorporating aspects of functional programming, e.g., higher-order func- tions, are becoming increasingly popular for large-scale distributed programming. New frameworks such as Apache Spark leverage functional techniques to provide hi ...

In this paper we show a general mechanism, called self-assembly, for lightweight language extensions (LLEs). LLEs allow users to define generic operations or properties that operate over a large class of types. With LLEs it is possible, for example, for us ...

The most successful systems for “big data” processing have all adopted functional APIs. We present a new programming model we call function passing designed to provide a more principled substrate on which to build data-centric distributed systems. A key id ...

Join patterns are an attractive declarative way to synchronize both threads and asynchronous distributed computations. We explore joins in the context of extensible pattern matching that recently appeared in languages such as F# and Scala. Our implementati ...

An important application of unique object references is safe and efficient message passing in concurrent object-oriented programming. However, to prevent the ill effects of aliasing, practical systems often severely restrict the shape of messages passed by ...

Implementing machine learning algorithms for large data, such as the Web graph and social networks, is challenging. Even though much research has focused on making sequential algorithms more scalable, their running times continue to be prohibitively long. ...

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have launched a scale shift in higher education, with several individual MOOCs now boasting tens or hundreds of thousands of participants worldwide. Our MOOC on the principles of functional programming has more than 100, ...

Type-and-effect systems are a well-studied approach for reasoning about the computational behavior of programs. Nevertheless, there is only one example of an effect system that has been adopted in a wide-spread industrial language: Java’s checked exception ...

Many programs have an inherently reactive nature imposed by the functional dependencies between their data and external events. Classically, these dependencies are dealt with using callbacks. Reactive programming with first-class reactive values is a parad ...

Languages like F#, C#, and recently also Scala, provide “async” extensions which aim to make asynchronous programming easier by avoiding an inversion of control that is inherent in traditional callback-based programming models (for the purpose of this pape ...

The actor computation model is especially suited for concurrent and distributed computations. Actors are basically concurrent processes which communicate through asynchronous message passing. When combined with pattern matching for messages, actor-based pr ...
