Concurrency and distribution pose algorithmic and implementation challenges in developing reliable distributed systems, making the field an excellent testbed for evaluating programming language and verification paradigms. Several specialized domain-specifi ...

Energy consumption of the Internet is already substantial and it is likely to increase as operators deploy faster equipment to handle popular bandwidth-intensive services, such as streaming and video-on-demand. Existing work on energy saving considers loca ...

Access networks include modems, home gateways, and DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), and are responsible for 70-80% of total network-based energy consumption. In this paper, we take an in-depth look at the problem of greening access networks, identify root ...

It is notoriously hard to develop dependable distributed systems. This is partly due to the difficulties in foreseeing various corner cases and failure scenarios while implementing a system that will be deployed over an asynchronous network. In contrast, r ...

We propose a new approach for developing and deploying distributed systems, in which nodes predict distributed consequences of their actions, and use this information to detect and avoid errors. Each node continuously runs a state exploration algorithm on ...

The emergence of OpenFlow-capable switches enables exciting new network functionality, at the risk of programming errors that make communication less reliable. The centralized programming model, where a single controller program manages the network, seems ...

This paper presents an algorithm to ensure the atomicity of a distributed storage that can be read and written by any number of clients. In failure-free and synchronous situations, and even if there is contention, our algorithm has a high write throughput ...

A major challenge for real-time streaming overlays is to distribute high bit-rate streams with uninterrupted playback. Hosts usually have sufficient inbound bandwidth to support streaming, but due to the prevalence of asymmetric links in broadband networks ...

A method and device for predicting faults in a distributed heterogeneous IT system (100), the method comprising: creating a local checkpoint (19) in an explorer node (10) of said system (100), said local checkpoint (19) reflecting the state of said explore ...

SDN deployments rely on switches that come from various vendors and differ in terms of performance and available features. Understanding these differences and performance characteristics is essential for ensuring successful deployments. In this paper we me ...

The increasing adoption of Software Defined Networking, and OpenFlow in particular, brings great hope for increasing extensibility and lowering costs of deploying new network functionality. A key component in these networks is the OpenFlow agent, a piece o ...

Software-defined networking, and the emergence of OpenFlow-capable switches, enables a wide range of new network functionality. However, enhanced programmability inevitably leads to more software faults (or bugs). We believe that tools for testing OpenFlow ...

Since the bandwidth-delay products of Internet links keep increasing, issues with TCP's convergence time, throughput, and amount of queuing in these environments are becoming more pressing. As we move toward the next-generation Internet, it is important to ...

Effective resource management of virtualized environments is a challenging task. State-of-the-art management systems either rely on analytical models or evaluate resource allocations by running actual experiments. However, both approaches incur a significa ...

DiCE is a system for online testing of federated and heterogeneous distributed systems. We have built a prototype of DiCE and integrated it with an open-source BGP router. DiCE quickly detects three important classes of faults, resulting from configuration ...
