The increasing penetration of variable renewable energies poses new challenges for grid management. The economic feasibility of grid-balancing plants may be limited by low annual operating hours if they work either only for power generation or only for pow ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have developed to a mature technology, able to achieve electrical efficiencies beyond 60%. This makes them particularly suitable for off-grid applications, where SOFCs can supply both electricity and heat at high efficiency. C ...

Electricity production and consumption must be balanced for the electrical grid. However, the rapidly growing intermittent power sources are now challenging the supply-demand balance, leading to large flexibility needs for grid management. The plant integr ...

Power-to-methane technologies have been regarded as a promising alternative to offer small or large-scale, long-timescale (daily/weekly/seasonal) energy storage as well as the opportunity of utilizing CO2. The performance of the core component, the electro ...

Reversible solid oxide cells (rSOC) can convert excess electricity to valuable fuels in electrolysis cell mode (SOEC) and reverse the reaction in fuel cell mode (SOFC). In this work, a five - cell rSOC short stack, integrating fuel electrode (Ni-YSZ) suppo ...

With a growing energy demand in a carbon-constrained society, fuels cells powered by renewable fuels, and specifically solid waste, are seen as interesting contributors to the energy portfolio. The alternative energy industry needs to reduce costs, enhance ...

The purpose of this paper is to assess techno-economically the integration of solid-oxide electrolysis in biomass-to-methanol processes: (1) The hydrogen produced by electrolysis can be used to adjust the composition of syngas from gasification to increase ...

The large market penetration of non-dispatchable renewable power sources (vRES), i.e., wind and photovoltaic, may be hampered by an increasing need for large scale energy storage capacity and the challenges of balancing the power grid. Novel technologies i ...

The deployment of renewable energy systems has been increasing steadily in recent years. The intermittency associated with the renewable electricity supply can be addressed through the usage of energy storage and release systems. In this framework, reversi ...
