The tidal influence on groundwater hydrodynamics, salt- water intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge from coastal/estuarine aquifers is poorly quantified for systems with a mildly sloping beach, in contrast to the case where a vertical beach face is ...

The Anzali Ramsar Convention wetland is located in an ecologically and economically important region in Iran. The wetland is largely surrounded by agriculture, natural forests and rangelands (approximately 36% and 63%, respectively). Urban areas consist of ...

The Three-Georges Dam holds many records in the history of engineering. While the dam has produced benefits in terms of flood control, hydropower generation and increased navigation capacity of the Yangtze River, serious questions have been raised concerni ...

A laboratory experiment and numerical modeling were used to examine effects of density gradients on hyporheic flow and solute transport under the condition of a solute pulse input to a river with regular bed forms. Relatively low-density gradients due to a ...

A recent method based on a specific power-law relationship between the matric potential head and the Boltzmann variable was presented by Prevedello et. al. (2008). Here, this relationship was generalized to a range of powers, and the solution extended to i ...

This work presents a numerical model able to simulate the effect of biomass growth on the hydraulic properties of saturated porous media, i.e., bioclogging. A new module for an existing coupled flow and reactive-transport code -- PHWAT -- was implemented. ...

An easy-to-customize, low-cost solution for remote imagery is described. The system, denoted ImPROV (Imaging Package for Remote Vehicles), supports multiple cameras, live streaming, long-range encrypted communication using mobile networks, positioning and ...

Many pharmaceutical products find their way into receiving waters, giving rise to concerns regarding their environmental impact. A procedure was proposed that enables ranking of the hazard to aquatic species and human health due to such products. In the pr ...

Rain splash soil erosion in the presence of rock fragments and different initial conditions was tested in laboratory flume experiments under controlled conditions. The aim of the experiments was to ascertain whether cumulative soil erosion is proportional ...

Mailapalli et al. (2009) presented an explicit numerical scheme for calculation of solutions to the 1D Green and Ampt (1911) infiltration equation. They compared their numerical solution to a numerical solution obtained using the Newton-Raphson method (e.g ...

River inflows have a major influence on lake water quality due to their input of sediments, nutrients and contaminants. After leaving the river channel, river waters form a plume and interact with ambient lake waters. Strong hydrodynamic changes take place ...

Net Surface Heat Flux (SurHF) was estimated from 2008 to 2014 for Lake Geneva (Switzerland/France), using long‐term temperature depth profiles at two locations, hourly maps of reanalysis meteorological data from a numerical weather model and lake surface w ...

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is an integral part of the hydrological cycle and represents an important aspect of land-ocean interactions. We used a numerical model to simulate flow and salt transport in a nearshore groundwater aquifer under varyin ...

Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are common environmental contaminants associated with a range of industrial and domestic activities. Although natural environments receiving LABs may exhibit a range of redox conditions, until now only aerobic biodegradation of ...

The Qiangtang Basin is a large endorheic basin in the inner part of the Tibetan Plateau and has been thought to be a dry region in contrast with its wet surrounding outer region that feeds all the major Asian rivers. Combining surface hydrological data wit ...

Unlike sediment transport in rivers, erosion of agricultural soil must overcome its cohesive strength to move soil particles into suspension. Soil particle size variability also leads to fall velocities covering many orders of magnitude, and hence to diffe ...

Many organic compounds present at low concentrations in municipal wastewater, such as various pharmaceuticals and biocides, are recalcitrant in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To improve their biodegradation, oxidoreductase enzymes such a ...

The simplest use of centrifuges to measure soil properties relies on steady state conditions. Analytical solutions, especially if they are simple, make interpretation of data more direct and transparent. Previous approximations are simplified and have a gr ...

The spatial variability of lake surface water temperature (LSWT) between smooth and rough surface areas and its potential association with the natural surfactant distribution in the surface microlayer were investigated for the first time in a lake. In spri ...

Accurate control of groundwater pH is of critical importance for in situ biological treatment of chlorinated solvents. This study evaluated a novel approach for buffering subsurface pH that relies on the use of silicate minerals as a long-term source of al ...
