The significance of sustained loading on the compressive and tensile strength of concrete has been experimentally verified since the 1950s and is currently acknowledged in most design codes implicitly or explicitly. However; its influence on other potentia ...

The impurity concentration in the tokamak divertor plasma is a necessary input for predictive scaling of divertor detachment, however direct measurements from existing tokamaks in different divertor plasma conditions are limited. To address this, we have a ...

Irradiations with 14 MeV fusion neutrons are planned at Joint European Torus (JET) in DT operations with the objective to validate the calculation of the activation of structural materials in functional materials expected in ITER and fusion plants. This st ...

In this paper, we analyze heat transport in the JET tokamak using data from its high resolution ECE diagnostic and analyses based on the transfer entropy (TE). The analysis reveals that heat transport is not smooth and continuous, but is characterized by ' ...

Horizontal loading due to earthquake or wind is usually the governing action for design of reinforced concrete cores in medium to tall buildings. Building cores designed to resist these actions must be dimensioned to resist tributary vertical loads and lar ...

The pressure gradient of the high confinement pedestal region at the edge of tokamak plasmas rapidly collapses during plasma eruptions called edge localised modes (ELMs), and then re-builds over a longer time scale before the next ELM. The physics that con ...

The influence of the level of deformation of the flexural reinforcement on the punching strength is well-established and mechanically founded since the pioneer works of Kinnunen and Nylander in the 1960’s. In code provisions, this influence is sometimes re ...

Shear has been observed to be often the governing failure mode of RC cantilever deck slabs of bridges without shear reinforcement subjected to concentrated loads when tested under a quasi-static application of the load. However, concentrated loads of heavy ...

Size effect has been theoretically and experimentally acknowledged as a phenomenon influencing the shear and punching shear strength of concrete structures, with reducing unitary shear strength for increasing member sizes. For members failing in shear, as ...

Aggregate interlocking allows transferring shear and normal stresses through open cracks, and is considered to significantly contribute to the force transfer in cracked concrete. The complex phenomenon depends on the roughness of cracked surfaces, where ma ...

The Eurocode 2 for the design of concrete structures (EN1992-1-1:2004) is undergoing a revision that will lead to the publication of the second generation of this code to be used across all CEN member countries. Therefore, the impact of the code will reach ...

In this study, beryllium tiles from Joint European Torus (JET) vacuum vessel wall were analysed and compared regarding their position in the vacuum vessel and differences in the exploitation conditions during two campaigns of ITER-Like-Wall (ILW) in 2011-2 ...

This paper investigates the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) arch-shaped members without transverse reinforcement subjected to bending. Such members have typical applications in tunnels, cut-and-cover structures, shells, vaults, ducts, silos ...

It is well known that control specimens used to assess the concrete strength of new structures have different casting and curing conditions than those of actual structures. Notably, after pouring of the concrete and before its hardening, a number of phenom ...

The strength and deformation capacity of concrete frames is typically governed by their nodal regions behaviour. This is particularly relevant for frame corners subjected to opening bending moments, where premature brittle failures may develop depending on ...

The low temperature boundary layer plasma (scrape-off layer or SOL) between the hot core and the surrounding vessel determines the level of power loading, erosion and implantation of material surfaces, and thus the viability of tokamak-based fusion as an e ...

Civil engineering projects typically involve a number of design phases, such as preliminary design, tender design and executive design. The required degree of accuracy for the analysis of the behaviour and strength of the structural members increases as a ...

Accurate measurement of the nuclear environment within a test tritium breeding-blanket module of a fusion reactor is crucial to determine tritium production rates which are relevant to self-sufficiency of tritium fuel supply, tritium accountancy and also t ...

Shear fatigue of reinforced concrete members without transverse reinforcement has been observed to be potentially governing for the strength of some structural members subjected to large live loads of repetitive nature (as traffic, wind or wave actions). A ...

A series of experimental observations of light impurity profiles was carried out in JET (Joint European Torus) ITER-like wall (ILW) L-mode plasmas in order to investigate their transport mechanisms. These discharges feature the presence of He-3, Be, C, N, ...
