Orientation selective neurons in the primary visual cortex typically respond to a range of orientations that covers 20, or more, while in psychophysical experiments, orientation bandwidth is often clearly narrower. Here, we measure the orientation specific ...

In reinforcement learning, an agent makes sequential decisions to maximize reward. During learning, the actual and expected outcome are compared to tell whether a decision was good or bad. The difference between the actual outcome and expected outcome is t ...

Most theories of perception assume a rigid relationship between objects of the physical world and the corresponding mental representations. We show by a priori reasoning that this assumption is not fulfilled. We claim instead that all object-representation ...

Visual backward masking is a reliable and widely used tool in schizophrenia research. Whereas many studies have shown masking deficits in adult patients, there are only very few studies with adolescents with psychosis-and with controversial results. Maskin ...

There are situations in which what is perceived in central vision is different to what is perceived in the periphery, even though the stimulus display is uniform. Here, we studied two cases, known as the Extinction illusion and the Honeycomb illusion, invo ...

Whereas much is known about the degenerative effects of aging on cortical tissue, less is known about how aging affects visually evoked electrical activity, and at what latencies. We compared visual processing in elderly and young controls using a visual m ...

The population of developed countries is aging at an ever increasing rate. Even in the absence of neurodegenerative diseases, aging affects perceptual and cognitive functions that are crucial for everyday life. The effects of healthy aging on cognitive abi ...

Crowding is traditionally thought to occur by local interactions between the target and the neighboring flankers, for example, by pooling neural responses corresponding to both the target and flankers. Accordingly, crowding is thought to occur within a sma ...

Humans can learn under a wide variety of feedback conditions. Reinforcement learning (RL), where a series of rewarded decisions must be made, is a particularly important type of learning. Computational and behavioral studies of RL have focused mainly on Ma ...

To cope with the continuously incoming stream of input, the visual system has to group information across space and time. Usually, spatial and temporal grouping are investigated separately. However, recent findings revealed that these two grouping mechanis ...

Schizophrenic patients show aberrancies of contextual processing over a broad range. Of particular importance are low level contextual deficiencies since they might cause higher level processing deficits. It was previously found that schizophrenic patients ...

How can we explain consciousness? This question has become a vibrant topic of neuroscience research in recent decades. A large body of empirical results has been accumulated, and many theories have been proposed. Certain theories suggest that consciousness ...

Our percept of the world is the result of interactions between central and peripheral vision. They can be facilitatory, because central vision is informative about what is in the periphery, or detrimental, such as when shape elements are pooled. We introdu ...

Perceptual learning is learning to see. For example in a bisection task, three parallel lines are presented with the central line slightly offset towards the right or the left outer line. Participants indicate the offset direction. Training gradually impro ...

We recently put forward an argument, the Unfolding Argument (UA), that integrated information theory (IIT) and other causal structure theories are either already falsified or unfalsifiable, which provoked significant criticism. It seems that we and the cri ...

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disease strongly influenced by genetic predisposition. A large variety of candidate genes has been identified of which each gene, however, explains only a small proportion of the genetic risk. For this reason, stable marker ...

Recent genetic, behavioral, and clinical studies suggest that functional psychoses (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder), previously thought to be distinct from each other, may belong to one continuum. The shine-through masking paradi ...

There seems to be no common factor for visual perception because performance levels in many visual tasks correlate only weakly with each other. Similar results were found with visual illusions. However, one may expect common visual factors for individuals ...

Alcohol affects vision. However, the influence of alcohol on visual processing is largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effects of alcohol on visual spatiotemporal processing. We employed a visual paradigm, the shine through backward masking paradigm, ...

Visual features need to be temporally integrated to detect motion signals and solve the many ill-posed problems of vision. It has previously been shown that such integration occurs in windows of unconscious processing of up to 450 milliseconds. However, wh ...
