A process for producing a metal article containing at least 10% interconnected porosity, using a preform (11), comprising: mixing an organic binder, a wetting agent and a granular material, to obtain a mouldable paste that combines 10 vol. pct. or more of ...

Al-6.4 wt% Ni open-cell foams produced by replication are tested in compression and in tension at room temperature and creep tested in tension at 450C. The mechanical behaviour of this foam at room temperature is consistent with that observed for other ope ...

Aluminium-5 wt.% magnesium open cell foam produced by replication and tested in tension at 300, 350 or 450 degrees C creeps at rates between 10(-3) and 10(-8) s(-1). The behaviour of the foam matches that of the alloy from which it is made: three-power law ...

Fracture toughness tests are conducted at room temperature and 923 K (650 degrees C) on SENB (Single Edge Notched Bend) specimens of three different (alpha(2) + gamma ) TiAl-based alloys. One alloy is a conventional near fully lamellar Ti-45Al-2Mn-2Nb + 0. ...

Microcellular aluminium can be produced by a process known as replication; this involves the infiltration of a packed bed of NaCl particles which are subsequently leached after metal solidification. The resulting material features a uniform distribution of ...

Metals are known to exhibit mechanical behaviour at the nanoscale different to bulk samples. This transition typically initiates at the micrometre scale, yet existing techniques to produce micrometre-sized samples often introduce artefacts that can influen ...

A method is presented that extends the replication process for the manufacture of open-celled metallic foams to include foams with spherical cells. Such foams are produced to a wide range of relative densities, tested for mechanical behaviour and resistanc ...

Microcellular aluminium can be produced by replication in porous material with pores across a wide range of sizes but with otherwise identical structures. Compressive tests reveal a plasticity size effect, with samples showing higher strengths and higher r ...

Open-pore 99.99% pure Al and Al-5 wt.% Mg foam produced by replication, with pores either 400 or 75 gm in average diameter, are tested in compression with repeated relaxation cycles, at room temperature. Similar data are collected on pure aluminium. Estima ...

The oxide film present along the interface between metal and pores in microcellular aluminium produced by replication depends on the leaching medium that is used to dissolve the NaCl preform: leaching in water produces a thick and irregular multilayered hy ...

The electrical conductivity of metallic foams varies strongly with porosity. Data are presented for replicated open-pore microcellular metal over a wide range of relative density. These data, together with data from the literature for different foam struct ...

Isothermal NaCl sintering experiments are conducted between 500 and 790 degrees C on powders 75, 100, 150 and 400 mu m in average diameter. Along with literature data, the results are compared with theoretical predictions for the initial stage of sintering ...

Tensile tests have been performed on replicated aluminum alloy foams of relative density between 4.5% and 8%. During the test the electrical resistance was measured with a four-point set-up and the displacements along the gage section were measured using a ...

Particulate reinforced material ...

Toughness measurements of a Ti-45Al-2N4u-2Nb + 0.8%vol TiB2 alloy with a. near fully lamellar microstructure and a Ti-46Al-8Nb alloy with a convoluted microstructure are performed at 650 degrees C under vacuum according to ASTM Standard E1820. Respective v ...

An innovation (patent pending) in the NaCl-based replication process for the manufacture of microcellular aluminium is presented that overcomes the limitations with the conventional method regarding large pore sizes (because large salt particles are often ...
