Clothing with integrated high-force actuators enables wearable haptics for immersive virtual reality (VR) and enables soft exoskeletons for rehabilitation or human augmentation. Electrostatic clutches (ESClutches) offer a very-low-energy solution to block ...

This paper reports the design, fabrication, and testing of a soft electroactive polymer power generator that has a volume of 1cm(3). The generator provides an opportunity to harvest energy from environmental sources to power wireless sensor networks becaus ...

Debris in space presents an ever-increasing problem for spacecraft in Earth orbit. As a step in the mitigation of this issue, the CleanSpace One (CSO) microsatellite has been proposed. Its mission is to perform active debris removal of a decommissioned nan ...

A methodology to predict shock and vibration levels that could lead to the failure of MEMS devices is reported as a function of vibration frequency and shock pulse duration. A combined experimental–analytical approach is developed, maintaining the simplici ...

A very low-loss tunable millimeter-wave phase shifter driven by dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) is presented. The device consists of a fixed coplanar waveguide (CPW) and two metallic loading strips suspended on an elastomer membrane. The horizontal o ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), a soft actuator technology, hold great promise for biomimetic underwater robots. The high-voltages required to drive DEAs can however make them challenging to use in water. This paper demonstrates a method to create D ...

Hydraulic impedance is a critical parameter for the operation of electrospray emitters, and for preventing flooding when spraying from arrays of emitters. Controlling flow rate by tuning the flow impedance allows accessing different operating modes, such a ...

Programmable soft materials exhibiting dynamically reconfigurable, reversible, fast, and latchable shape transformation are key for applications ranging from wearable tactile actuators to deployable soft robots. Multimorph soft actuator sheets with high lo ...

The magnetic field of the permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source SWISSCASE located at the University of Bern has been numerically simulated and experimentally investigated. For the first time the magnetized volume qualified for elec ...

Electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) allows rapid movement of liquid droplets on a smooth surface, with applications ranging from lab-on-chip devices to micro-actuators. The in-plane force on a droplet is a key indicator of EWOD performance. This force has ...

Electro-adhesion (EA) is a low-power, tunable, fast and reversible electrically-controlled adhesion method, effective on both conducting and insulating objects. Typically, only the electro-adhesive detachment force, i.e., the force required to separate an ...

This paper presents a novel concept for a compact low-cost Earth sensor based on imaging atmospheric oxygen emission at 762nm using arrays of single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs). In both nighttime and daytime there is continuous emission at 762nm due to ...

Handling of fabric is a crucial step in the manufacturing of garments. This task is typically performed by trained workers who manipulate one sheet at a time, thus introducing a bottleneck in the automation of the textile industry. This paper seeks to addr ...

We present the fabrication and testing of a novel MEMS inertial sensor that directly measures the gravity gradient in low Earth orbit in order to sense the relative orientation of a satellite with respect to the Earth. Instead of the current Earth sensing ...

We present a stretchable tunable transmission grating in which the optical surface serves simultaneously as an electrode for electrostatic actuation. Tunable optics based on elastomers allow for a large tuning range, but integrating an actuator generally s ...

A multimaterial inkjet printing method for integrated soft multifunctional machines is reported, combining dense arrays of electrostatic actuators, multilayer electrical routing, and complex networks of microfluidic channels in one printing process. Most a ...

The present invention relates to a method for a low cost Planet vector Sensor based on imaging atmospheric oxygen emission at 762 nm or at 557.7 wavelengths using either CMOS, CCD or arrays of single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs). In both daytime and nig ...

We present a mechanically active cell culture substrate that produces complex strain patterns and generates extremely high strain rates. The transparent miniaturized cell stretcher is compatible with live cell microscopy and provides a very compact and por ...

We demonstrate the use of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) for mechanical stimulation of cells in vitro. The development of living tissues is regulated by their mechanical environment through the modification of fundamental cellular functions such as ...

This paper reports on the electrochemical characterization and comparison of printable silver inks for the fabrication of planar electrodes to integrate in a microfluidic platform for in situ desalination of seawater prior to detection of nutrients in mari ...
