We unveil the nature of the structural disorder in bottom-up zigzag graphene nanoribbons along with its effect on the magnetism and electronic transport on the basis of scanning probe microscopies and first-principles calculations. We find that edge-missin ...

Understanding radiation-induced defect formation in carbon materials is crucial for nuclear technology and for the manufacturing of nanostructures with desired properties. Using first-principles molecular dynamics, we perform a systematic study of the none ...

In this Letter we address the reentrance of magic-angle phenomena (band flatness and quantum-geometric transport) in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) subjected to strong magnetic fluxes +/-(1)0, +/- 200, +/- 3(p0 ... ((D0 = h/e is the flux quantum per moire ...

The phenomenon of magnetism is one of the key components of today's technological progress. Magnetic interactions and magnetic materials are essential for the scientific disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology, making this subject truly multidiscipli ...

Atomically thin films of layered chromium triiodide (CrI3) have recently been regarded as suitable candidates for a wide spectrum of technologically relevant applications, mainly owing to the opportunities they offer for achieving a reversible transition b ...

The topological classification of matter has been extended to include semimetallic phases characterized by the presence of topologically protected band degeneracies. In Weyl semimetals, the foundational gapless topological phase, chiral degeneracies are is ...

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in the bulk and surface states of the noncentrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases, ...

Ordinary metals contain electron liquids within well-defined 'Fermi' surfaces at which the electrons behave as if they were non-interacting. In the absence of transitions to entirely new phases such as insulators or superconductors, interactions between el ...

Hydrogen adatoms and other species covalently bound to graphene act as resonant scattering centers affecting the electronic transport properties and inducing Anderson localization. We show that attractive interactions between adatoms on graphene and their ...

The success of all-graphene electronics is severely hindered by the challenging realization and subsequent integration of semiconducting channels and metallic contacts. Here, we comprehensively investigate the electronic transport across width-modulated he ...

Band inversion, one of the key signatures of time-reversal invariant topological insulators (TIs), arises mostly due to the spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Here, based on ab initio density-functional calculations, we report a theoretical investigation of the SO- ...

Controlling the size of single-digit pores, such as those in graphene, with an & Aring; resolution has been challenging due to the limited understanding of pore evolution at the atomic scale. The controlled oxidation of graphene has led to & Aring;-scale p ...

Kane and Mele predicted that in the presence of spin-orbit interaction graphene realizes the quantum spin Hall state [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 226801 (2005)]. However, exceptionally weak intrinsic spin-orbit splitting in graphene (approximate to 10(-5) eV) inh ...

The electronic and magnetic properties of individual Fe atoms adsorbed on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Te3(111) are investigated. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy prove the existence of two distinct types of Fe species, while o ...

Charge neutrality and their expected itinerant nature makes excitons potential transmitters of information. However, exciton mobility remains inaccessible to traditional optical experiments that only create and detect excitons with negligible momentum. Her ...

Graphene, a single atomic layer of graphitic carbon, has attracted intense attention because of its extraordinary properties that make it a suitable material for a wide range of technological applications. Large-area graphene films, which are necessary for ...

Dislocations and grain boundaries are intrinsic topological defects of large-scale polycrystalline samples of graphene. These structural irregularities have been shown to strongly affect electronic transport in this material. Here, we report a systematic i ...

We model interactions following the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) framework in disordered graphene flakes up to 300 000 atoms in size (-100 nm in diameter) subjected to an out-of-plane magnetic field B of 5-20 Tesla within the tight-binding formalism. We investi ...

The fascinating properties of graphene, the first two-dimensional (2D) material, and the accompanying strong activity in the research community have sparked a renewed interest in related layered crystalline materials with unique electronic and optical prop ...

A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chiral anom ...
