Controlled doping of SrCu2(BO3)(2), a faithful realization of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, with nonmagnetic impurities generates bound states below the spin gap. These bound states and their symmetry properties ...

The electronic structure of a Pb overlayer on Ag(111) has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We identify three p bands. While the p(xy) bands are sharp and closely resemble the corresponding bands of a free-standing Pb layer, the p( ...

Despite their simple formulation, short-range classical antiferromagnetic Ising models on frustrated lattices give rise to exotic phases of matter, in particular, due to their macroscopic ground-state degeneracy. Recent experiments on artificial spin syste ...

BaCuSi2O6 is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical appli ...

We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S = 1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the density-matrix renormalization-group, Bethe ansatz, and field-theoretical considerations. In a large region of the paramete ...

Results of electron spin resonance studies of copper pyrimidine dinitrate (Cu-PM, [PM-Cu(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)] (n) , PM = pyrimidine), a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain material with alternating g-tensor and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, in pulsed magnet ...

We investigate the competition between spin supersolidity and phase separation in a frustrated spin-half model of weakly coupled dimers. We start by considering systems of hard-core bosons on the square lattice, onto which the low-energy physics of the her ...

We investigate the minus-sign problem that afflicts quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of frustrated quantum spin systems, focusing on spin S = 1/2, two spatial dimensions, and the extended Shastry-Sutherland model. We show that formulating the Hamilton ...

Motivated by the current interest in the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, we investigate the phase diagram of the closely related fully frustrated transverse-field Ising model on the honeycomb lattice using classical and semiclassical approxi ...

We investigate the thermal properties of the 13 plateau in the Shastry-Sutherland model with infinite projected entangled-pair states by performing the imaginary-time evolution of the infinite-temperature density matrix. We show that both the Z2 and Z3 bro ...

We present a numerical study of the SU(N) Heisenberg model with the fundamental representation at each site for the kagome lattice (for N = 3) and the checkerboard lattice (for N = 4), which are the line graphs of the honeycomb and square lattices and thus ...

We study a quantum version of the three-state Potts model that includes as special cases the effective models of bosons and fermions on the square lattice in the Mott-insulating limit. It can be viewed as a model of quantum permutations with amplitudes J(p ...

The thermodynamic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model have posed one of the longest-lasting conundrums in frustrated quantum magnetism. Over a wide range on both sides of the quantum phase transition (QPT) from the dimer-product state to the plaquet ...

Motivated by an intriguing report, in some frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, of magnetization plateaus whose simple collinear structure is not stabilized by an external magnetic field in the classical limit, we develop a semiclassical method to estimate ...

Using perturbative expansions and the contractor renormalization (CORE) algorithm, we obtain effective hard-core bosonic Hamiltonians describing the low-energy physics of S=1/2 spin-dimer antiferromagnets known to display supersolid phases under an applied ...

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field-theory arguments, we study the fully frustrated transversefield Ising model on the square lattice for the purpose of quantitatively relating two different order parameters to each other. We consider a "primar ...

Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations, we systematically study the doping dependence of the crossover from one to two dimensions and its impact on the magnetic properties of the Hubbard model. A square lattice of chains is used, in which ...

Classical and quantum phase transitions (QPTs), with their accompanying concepts of criticality and universality, are a cornerstone of statistical thermodynamics. An excellent example of a controlled QPT is the field-induced ordering of a gapped quantum ma ...

We numerically demonstrate that, although it is critical, the two-box symmetric SU(3) chain possesses edge states in the adjoint representation whose excitation energy scales with the number of sites Ns as 1/(Ns log Ns), in close analogy to those found in ...

We show that the chirality of triangular antiferromagnetic clusters can be used as a qubit even if it is entirely decoupled from the total spin of the cluster. In particular, we estimate the orbital moment associated with the chirality, and we show that it ...
