The process industries are characterized by a large number of continuously operating plants, for which optimal operation is of economic importance. However, optimal operation is particularly difficult to achieve when the process model used in the optimizat ...

There still exists a large gap between simulation work and industrial applications in the context of control and optimization of solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) systems. In an effort to bridge this gap, this study describes the experimental implementation of ...

Optimal operation of chemical processes is key for meeting productivity, quality, safety and environmental objectives. Both model-based and data-driven schemes are used to compute optimal operating conditions [1]: - The model-based techniques are intu ...

The experimental implementation of real-time optimization (RTO) to a commercial solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) system is reported in this paper. The goal of RTO is to maximize the system efficiency at steady state subject to several operating constraints. Th ...

Modifier adaptation (MA) is a real-time optimization (RTO) method characterized by its ability to enforce plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of model uncertainty. The approach is based on correcting the available model using gradient es ...

This paper investigates the problem of load-sharing optimization of gas compressors in the presence of uncertainty. The objective is to operate a set of compressor units in an energy-efficient way, while at the same time meeting a varying load demand. The ...

In the context of real-time optimization, modifier-adaptation schemes update the model-based optimization problem by adding first-order correction terms to the cost and constraint functions of the optimization problem. This guarantees meeting the plant fir ...

On-line control and optimization can improve the efficiency of fuel cell systems whilst simultaneously ensuring that the operation remains within a safe region. Also, fuel cells are subject to frequent variations in their power demand. This paper investigate ...

For good performance in practice, real-time optimization schemes need to be able to deal with the inevitable plant-model mismatch problem. Unlike the two-step schemes combining parameter estimation and optimization, the modifier-adaptation approach does no ...

For the optimization of dynamic systems, it is customary to use measurements to combat the effect of uncertainty. In this context, an approach that consists of tracking the necessary conditions of optimality is gaining in popularity. The approach relies st ...

Recently, measurement-based optimization schemes have been developed to deal with uncertainty and process variations. One of the methods therein, labeled NCO tracking, relies on appropriate parameterization of the input profiles and adjusts the correspondi ...

In the framework of real-time optimization, measurements are used to compensate for effects of uncertainty. The main approach uses measurements to update the parameters of a process model. In contrast, the constraint-adaptation scheme uses the measurements ...

This paper presents an overview of the recent developments of modifier-adaptationschemes for real-time optimization of uncertain processes. These schemes have the ability to reach plant optimality upon convergence despite the presence of structural plant-m ...

The modifier-adaptation methodology enables real-time optimization (RTO) of plant operation in the presence of considerable plant-model mismatch. It requires the estimation of plant gradients. Obtaining these gradients is expensive as it involves potential ...

For good performance in practice, real-time optimization schemes need to be able to deal with the inevitable model-mismatch problem. Unlike the two-step schemes combining parameter estimation and optimization, the modifier-adaptation approach uses experime ...
