Dwindling fossil resources and their associated environmental concerns have increased interest in biobased products. In particular, many approaches to convert lignocellulosic biomass into small-molecule building blocks are being explored via thermal, chemi ...

A central feature of most lignocellulosic-biomass-valorization strategies is the depolymerization of all its three major constituents: cellulose and hemicellulose to simple sugars, and lignin to phenolic monomers. However, reactive intermediates, generally ...

Endocarp biomass, which forms much of the inedible portion of nuts and stone fruits, is a promising feedstock for aromatic chemical production due to its high lignin content and because it is a food industry waste. Here, we tested the nut shells and fruit ...

The amphiphilic chemical structure of native lignin, composed by a hydrophobic aromatic core and hydrophilic hydroxy groups, makes it a promising alternative for the development of bio-based surface-active compounds. However, the severe conditions traditio ...

Our ability to study and valorize the lignin fraction of biomass is hampered by the fundamental and still unmet challenge of precisely quantifying native lignin's structural features. Here, we developed a rapid elevated-temperature H-1-C-13 Heteronuclear S ...

Background Understanding how the digestibility of lignocellulosic biomass is affected by its morphology is essential to design efficient processes for biomass deconstruction. In this study, we used a model based on a set of partial differential equations d ...

Lignocellulose is one of the most promising renewable bioresources for the production of chemicals. For sustainable and competitive biorefineries, effective valorization of all biomass fractions is crucial. However, current efforts in lignocellulose fracti ...

Producing high-performance materials from renewable carbon at high efficiency and ensuring a sustainable end-of-life scenario can notably reduce the CO2 footprint of the plastics industry. A recent example of such a material is poly(butylene xylosediglyoxy ...

Pt-group metal (PGM)-free catalysts of the Me-N-C type based on abundant and inexpensive elements have gained importance in the field of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis due to their promising ORR-activities. Their insufficient stability, h ...

Microbial consortia are a promising alternative to monocultures of genetically modified microorganisms for complex biotransformations. We developed a versatile consortium-based strategy for the direct conversion of lignocellulose to short-chain fatty acids ...

The valorisation of the plant biopolymer lignin is now recognised as essential to enabling the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. In this context, the "lignin-first" biorefining approach, in which lignin valorisation is conside ...

The development of sustainable plastics from abundant renewable feedstocks has been limited by the complexity and efficiency of their production, as well as their lack of competitive material properties. Here we demonstrate the direct transformation of the ...

Concerns over the sustainability and end-of-life properties of fossil-derived surfactants have driven interest in bio-based alternatives. Lignocellulosic biomass with its polar functional groups is an obvious feedstock for surfactant production but its use ...

Valorizing CO2 into chemical building blocks via efficient electrified processes could significantly decrease carbon emissions. In this work, a device that allows generation of tunable micro‐plasma modes (arc, pulsed, pulsed arc) on a chip for efficient, l ...

The solar-driven electrochemical reduction of CO2 to fuels and chemicals provides a promising way for closing the anthropogenic carbon cycle. However, the lack of selective and Earth-abundant catalysts able to achieve the desired transformation reactions i ...

Lignin is the most abundant aromatic polymer in nature and as such is an attractive source of aromatic molecules. Efficient lignin utilization will also likely play a key role in the economic success and sustainability of biomass valorization schemes. Howe ...

Biomass is a possible renewable alternative to fossil carbon sources. Today, many bio-resources can be converted to direct substitutes or suitable alternatives to fossil-based fuels and chemicals. However, catalyst deactivation under the harsh, often liqui ...

The large-scale production of platform chemicals from biomass requires efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable methods. Here, we present three one-pot synthesis routes for producing diformylxylose (DFX), a sugar-based solvent and platform chemical, usin ...

Depolymerization of lignin into aromatic monomers is one of the highest priority targets for valorization of lignin obtained from biomass pretreatment. Oxidative lignin depolymerization proceeds rapidly under alkaline conditions at elevated temperature wit ...

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising approach to fractionate lignocellulose and convert lignin to a narrow product slate. To guide research towards commercialization, cost and sustainability must be considered. Here we report a techno-eco ...
