This paper presents the results of a study performed in order to evaluate whether a navigation technique, based on scaling the user’s avatar, impacts the user’s ability to correctly assess the size of virtual objects in a virtual environment. This study wa ...

While there have been numerous studies of the vestibular system in mammals, less is known about the brain mechanisms of vestibular processing in humans. In particular, of the studies that have been carried out in humans over the last 30 years, none has inv ...

The perception of one's own body is subject to systematic distortions and can be influenced by exposure to visual stimuli showing distorted bodies. In Virtual Reality (VR), echoing such body judgment inaccuracies, avatars with strong appearance dissimilari ...

Exteroceptive bodily signals (including tactile, proprioceptive and visual signals) are important information contributing to self-consciousness. Moreover, prominent theories proposed that visceral signals about internal bodily states are equally or even m ...

This paper details the development and preliminary testing of GaitSkin, a wearable haptic interface designed for generating sensorimotor conflicts during locomotion. The system leverages real-time gait tracking and a wireless vibrotactile skin patch to pro ...

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an approved treatment for truncal and limb neuropathic pain. However, pain relief is often suboptimal and SCS efficacy may reduce over time, requiring sometimes the addition of other pain therapies, stimulator revision, or ...

Introduction: Personally meaningful past episodes, defined as episodic memories (EM), are subjectively re-experienced from the natural perspective and location of one's own body, as described by bodily self-consciousness (BSC). Neurobiological mechanisms o ...

When placed inside an immersive virtual simulation, subjects will tend to experience the feeling of being 'really there' and to respond realistically to their environment, forgetting that it is not real. This behaviour is observed when subjects experience ...

Knowing where objects are relative to us implies knowing where we are relative to the external world. Here, we investigated whether space perception can be influenced by an experimentally induced change in perceived self-location. To dissociate real and ap ...

Our sense of agency, the subjective experience of controlling our actions, is a crucial component of self-awareness and motor control. It is thought to originate from the comparison between intentions and actions across broad cortical networks. However, th ...

The processing of interoceptive signals in the insular cortex is thought to underlie self-awareness. However, the influence of interoception on visual awareness and the role of the insular cortex in this process remain unclear. Here, we show in a series of ...

In this paper, we present a study, conducted over 8 social phobic subjects, whose aim is to evaluate the efficiency and flexibility of virtual reality as a therapeutic tool in the confines of a social phobia behavioural therapeutic program. Our research pr ...

Third Person Perspective (3PP) viewpoints have the potential to expand how one perceives and acts in a virtual environment. They offer increased awareness of the posture and of the surrounding of the virtual body as compared to First Person Perspective (1P ...

Providing Virtual Reality(VR) users with a 3D representation of their body complements the experience of immersion and presence in the virtual world with the experience of being physically located and more personally involved. A full-body avatar representa ...

Tales of ghosts, wraiths, and other apparitions have been reported in virtually all cultures. The strange sensation that somebody is nearby when no one is actually present and cannot be seen (feeling of a presence, FOP) is a fascinating feat of the human m ...

In this paper we evaluate the use of non-planar projections as a means to increase the Field of View (FoV) in embodied Virtual Reality (VR). Our main goal is to bring the virtual body into the user’s FoV and to understand how this affects the virtual body/ ...

The brain mechanism of embodiment in a virtual body has grown a scientific interest recently, with a particular focus on providing optimal virtual reality (VR) experiences. Disruptions from an embodied state to a less- or non-embodied state, denominated Br ...

We interact with the world through a body that includes hands and fingers. Likewise, providing an avatar allowing the control of a virtual body with fingers is an important step to improve the user experience in VR. When the user and their avatar skeleton ...

A computer-implemented method for inducing an Out of Body Experience (OBE) in a user through an augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) system, the OBE including an exit state and a disembodiment state, the method comprising the steps of (a) changing the user vi ...
