Modern ammonia production plants are equipped with efficient energy integration networks able to recover an important fraction of the waste heat exergy available throughout the chemical system. However, in order to drive the endothermic reforming reactions ...

This study presents a methodology based on the process integration techniques and multiple representation of heating and cooling requirement concept to improve the energy efficiency of a large-scale chemical plant. Considering the difficulties of data gath ...

The global transition to decentralized energy systems signifies a fundamental transformation toward sustainable energy paradigms. This study specifically focuses on the Swiss energy system, analyzing how dynamic pricing influences the strategic decisions o ...

This study proposes a multi-objective optimization methodology for planning multi-energy complementary distributed energy systems considering process synergy and thermal integration. The process integration tech-nique is integrated into the Energy Hub mode ...

The aluminium sector relies on natural gas for the conversion of recycled scrap into new feedstock, which results in substantial atmospheric emissions. Hydric resources are also impacted, as they serve as heat sinks for the waste heat generated during the ...

A new type of district energy network has recently been proposed that is based on the use of CO2 as a heat transfer fluid. It uses the latent heat of vaporization, instead of sensible heat, to store and transfer heat. Previous studies have focused on demon ...

Given the challenges related to climate change and dependency from fossil fuels, modification of the energy systems infrastructure to increase the share of renewable energy is a priority in urban energy planning. The high heating density in cities makes it ...

Catalytic hydrothermal gasification is a promising technology which allows the conversion of wet biomass into methane rich syngas. It consists of three major steps, in which thermal energy has to be supplied at different temperature levels, leading to mult ...

Perovskite solar cells are among the most dominant emerging PV technologies which have shown unparallel improvement in power conversion efficiency in just over a decade. Long charge carrier diffusion lengths and lifetimes, high absorption coefficients, ban ...

Energy efficiency is crucial for the sustainable operation of all industrial and urban sectors. However, practicing engineers have seldom access to open-source tools that can readily evaluate and compare scenarios in terms of energy consumption, cost, and ...

Pinch analysis and Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) have been extensively studied for optimization of industrial processes addressing heat recovery, utility selection and sizing. Analysis of renewable utility integration, such as solar thermal or ph ...

The concept of the IntegrCiTy platform is built around the development of a single application as a suite of independent software: project partners will mutualize a certain number of tools that shall be integrated in the IntegrCiTy platform. Therefore, a r ...

In order to alleviate the environmental impact that nitrogen fertilizers production is responsible for, several efforts have been addressed to incentivize the partial or total decarbonization of the supply chains of ammonia and its derivatives. The decarbo ...

The pursuit of alternative energy sources for the nitrogen fertilizers sector has recently earned renewed interest due to increasing concerns regarding the world dependence on non-renewable energy resources and also motivated by the more stringent environm ...

The biogas needs to be reformed before electro-chemical conversion in the solid-oxide fuel cell, which can be promoted efficiently with wise thermal management and reforming conditions. To ensure the system safety and catalysts durability, additional miner ...

The use of biomass gasification for partially or totally replacing methane in the integrated syngas and ammonia production plant is compared with the performance of the conventional route, typically based on steam methane reforming. However, by undertaking ...

Woody biomass, a renewable energy resource, accumulates solar energy in form of carbon hydrates produced from atmospheric CO2 and H2O. It is, therefore, a means of CO2 mitigation for society as long as the biogenic carbon released to the atmosphere when de ...

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energies poses new challenges for grid management. The economic feasibility of grid-balancing plants may be limited by low annual operating hours if they work either only for power generation or only for pow ...

CO2 is used more and more as a refrigerant in the commercial and food retail industries and a majority of experts believe that its share in the field of residential heating, commercial refrigeration and mobile air conditioning across Europe will be higher ...

Fuels from bio-based resources hold the potential to supply fossil fuel alternatives at reasonable economic and environmental expenses that can assist emission reduction in the transportation sector. However, apart from a general need to reduce fossil-base ...
