IntroductionDesulfitobacterium hafniense was isolated for its ability to use organohalogens as terminal electron acceptors via organohalide respiration (OHR). In contrast to obligate OHR bacteria, Desulfitobacterium spp. show a highly versatile energy meta ...

• Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a promising alternative wastewater treatment to the conventional activated sludge system. As AGS has enhanced settling abilities and provides different redox conditions across the granules at the same time, the processes ...

Organohalide respiration (OHR) is the energy metabolism of anaerobic bacteria able to use halogenated organic compounds as terminal electron acceptors. While the terminal enzymes in OHR, so-called reductive dehalogenases, are well-characterized, the identi ...

Two anaerobic, tetrachloroethene- (PCE-) respiring bacterial isolates, designated strain ACSDCE T and strain ACSTCE, were characterized using a polyphasic approach. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, motile, non-spore-forming and shared a vibrioid- to spirill ...

There is a pressing need to develop sustainable and efficient methods to protect and stabilize iron objects. To develop a conservation-restoration method for corroded iron objects, this bio-protocol presents the steps to investigate reductive dissolution o ...

In oxidative phosphorylation, respiratory complex I serves as an entry point in the electron transport chain for electrons generated in catabolic processes in the form of NADH. An ancestral version of the complex, lacking the NADH-oxidising module, is enco ...

The rate at which organic contaminants can be degraded in aquatic environments is not only dependent upon specific degrading bacteria, but also upon the composition of the microbial community, mass transfer of the contaminant, and abiotic processes that oc ...

The extent, mechanism(s), and rate of chlorinated ethene degradation in a large tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume were investigated in an extensive sampling campaign. Multiple lines of evidence for this degradation were explored, including compound-specific is ...

Methylated arsenic (As) species represent a significant fraction of the As accumulating in rice grains, and there are geographic patterns in the abundance of methylated arsenic in rice that are not understood. The microorganisms driving As biomethylation i ...

The twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway is a protein targeting system present in many prokaryotes. The physiological role of the Tat pathway is the transmembrane translocation of fully-folded proteins, which are targeted by N-terminal signal peptides ...

The rhodanese protein domain is common throughout all kingdoms of life and is characterized by an active site cysteine residue that is able to bind sulfane sulfur and catalyse sulfur transfer. No unique function has been attributed to rhodanese-domain-cont ...

Complete genomes can be recovered from metagenomes by assembling and binning DNA sequences into metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs). Yet, the presence of microdiversity can hamper the assembly and binning processes, possibly yielding chimeric, highly fragm ...

Relatively high concentrations of micropollutants in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents underscore the necessity to develop additional treatment steps prior to discharge of treated wastewater. Microorganisms that produce unspecific oxida ...

Background: In molecular microbial ecology, massive sequencing is gradually replacing classical fingerprinting techniques such as terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) combined with cloning-sequencing for the characterization of microb ...

Organohalide respiration (OHR) is a bacterial anaerobic process that uses halogenated compounds, e.g., tetrachloroethene (PCE), as terminal electron acceptors. Our model organisms are Dehalobacter restrictus strain PER-K23, an obligate OHR bacterium (OHRB) ...

This study evaluates mechanisms of biogenic mineral formation induced by bacterial iron reduction for the stabilization of corroded iron. As an example, the Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 was employed to treat corroded coupons presenting urban na ...

During the past 20 years, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been extensively studied with the aim to develop an attractive alternative to conventional activated sludge for wastewater treatment. The phosphate-accumulating organism (PAO) Candidatus ‘Accumuli ...

The long-term buffering potential of three silicate minerals (diopside, fayalite and forsterite) present as fine particles in porous quartz sand medium was evaluated in flow-through column experiments over a period of 6.5 months. The columns were operated ...

A multielectrode setup for protein OFFGEL electrophoresis that significantly improves protein separation efficiency has been developed. Here, the electric field is applied by segments between seven electrodes connected in series to six independent power su ...
