The success of seedlings and rejuvenated woody debris growing on river bedforms depends on the resistance to uprooting by flow provided by their simple root architecture. Avena sativa and Medicago sativa seedlings were used in flume experiments as prototyp ...

In order to meet the growing demand for energy, the development of hydropower leads to an increase of the river exploitation by human activities. Thereby, water management has become a major issue in the energy transition. A better definition of the flow r ...

We quantify the synchronization between snowfall and natural avalanches in relation to terrain properties at the detachment zone. We analyze field statistics of 549 avalanche events in terms of slope, aspect, timing, coordinate, and release area, identifie ...

Riparian vegetation stabilizes sediment by its roots and henceforth impacts riparian morphodynamics. After germination or vegetative reproduction on river bars or islands, juvenile plants are exposed to a high risk of mortality due to uprooting by floods. ...

We investigate vegetation uprooting by flow for Avena sativa seedlings with stem-to-sediment size ratio close to unity and vanishing obstacle-induced scouring. By inducing parallel riverbed erosion within an experimental flume, we measure the time-to-uproo ...

We investigate the influence of vegetation on river morphological instabilities using an analytical framework. We first discuss the important role of the hydrological (flooding frequency) and biological (vegetation development rate) timescales. As long as ...

Investigating the colonization of river bars by pioneer vegetation, we discuss how the balance between uprooting by flooding events and reinforcement of plant roots determines the ability for vegetation to colonize the riverbed. In order to access the comp ...

We study the dynamics of systems with deterministic trajectories randomly forced by instantaneous discontinuous jumps occurring according to two different compound Poisson processes. One process, with constant frequency, causes instantaneous positive rando ...

Many rivers worldwide show converging sections where a characteristic limiting front for vegetation establishment on gravel bars is observed. An important conceptual model was advanced in 2006 by Gurnell and Petts, who demonstrated that for the convergent ...

Viruses in wastewater and natural environments are often present as aggregates. The disinfectant dose required for their inactivation, however, is typically determined with dispersed viruses. This study investigates how aggregation affects virus inactivati ...

We study the Josephson effect in a superconductor--ferromagnet--superconductor (SFS) junction with ferromagnetic domains of non-collinear magnetization. As a model for our study we consider a diffusive junction with two ferromagnetic domains along the junc ...

The appearance of the regular vegetated ridge patterns observed in some ephemeral rivers of semi-arid regions (Nanson, Tooth, & Knigthon 2002) has previously been explained by hydraulic arguments (optimization of the bed load transport capacity, see Huang ...

Several research investigations have explored the interaction between morphodynamic and vegetation growth processes from both the modelling and the experimental viewpoints. Results have mainly been concerned with morphologic analyses of the effects of vege ...

We study a diffusive superconductor–normal-metal–superconductor (SNS) junction in an external magnetic field. In the limit of a long junction, we find that the form of the dependence of the Josephson current on the field and on the length of the junction d ...

We propose a minimal model for the response of seedlings to pullout constraints. Central to our approach is the idea of capturing not only average mechanical properties but also the stochastic component of the uprooting process. Our model accounts on one h ...

We analyze the results from a flume experiment presented in a companion paper by Perona et al. [1] exploring the selective action of floods on pioneer riparian vegetation. We study the way seedlings react to periodic flow disturbances in the early stages o ...
