In the context of environmental monitoring, outdoor wireless cameras are vulnerable to natural hazards. To benefit from the inexpensive imaging sensors, we introduce a multi-camera monitoring system to share the physical risk. With multiple cameras focusin ...

Elevated in-stream temperature has led to a surge in the occurrence of parasitic intrusion proliferative kidney disease and has resulted in fish kills throughout Switzerland's waterways. Data from distributed temperature sensing (DTS) in-stream measurement ...

A field measurement campaign was conducted from June to October 2009 in a 20 km2 catchment of the Swiss Alps with a wireless network of 12 weather stations and river discharge monitoring. The objective was to investigate the spatial variability of meteorol ...

Reducing energy cost is crucial for energy-constrained smart wireless cameras. Existing platforms impose two main challenges: First, most commercial smart phones have a closed platform, which makes it impossible to manage low-level circuits. Since the samp ...

Recent advances in wireless communications and computing technology are enabling the emergence of low-cost devices that incorporate sensing, processing, and communication functionalities. A large number of these devices are deployed in the field to create ...

SensorScope is a turnkey solution for environmental monitoring systems, based on a wireless sensor network and resulting from a collaboration between environmental and network researchers. Given the interest in climate change, environmental monitoring is a ...

In environmental monitoring applications, having multiple cameras focus on common scenery increases robustness of the system. To save energy based on user demand, successive refinement image coding is important, as it allows us to progressively request bet ...

The SensorScope project is a collaboration between environmental scientists and hardware/software engineers at EPFL. It will consist of two large-scale outdoor sensor networking deployments, the first on the EPFL campus, and the second on an alpine glacier ...

Reducing communication cost is crucial for outdoor wireless monitoring cameras which are constrained by limited energy budgets. From event detection point of view, traditional video coding schemes such as H.264 are inefficient as they ignore the "meaning" ...

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the base station (BS) is a critical sensor node whose failure causes severe data losses. Deploying multiple fixed BSs improves the robustness, yet requires all BSs to be installed with large batteries and large energy-ha ...

The determination of the sensible heat flux over urban terrain is challenging due to irregular surface geometry and surface types. To address this, in 2006–07, a major field campaign (LUCE) took place at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne campus, ...

How often have you been able to implement an algorithm as it is described in a paper? And when you did, were you confident that you had exactly the same parameter values and results as the authors of the paper? All too often, articles do not describe all t ...

Low-cost monitoring cameras/webcams provide unique visual information. To take advantage of the vast image dataset captured by a typical webcam, we consider the problem of retrieving weather information from a database of still images. The task is to autom ...

This paper outlines a vision for community-driven sensing of our environment. At its core, community sensing is a dynamic new form of mobile geosensor network. We believe that community sensing networks, in order to be widely deployable and sustainable, ne ...

This paper proposes a new extension of the classical degree-day snowmelt model applicable to hourly simulations for regions with limited data and adaptable to a broad range of spatially-explicit hydrological models. The snowmelt schemes have been tested wi ...

While wireless sensor networks have been extensively studied in the past few years, most results are of theoretical nature and were obtained outside of a practical context. This can be problematic for real applications, especially in the area of environmen ...

Lattice networks are widely used in regular settings like grid computing, distributed control, satellite constellations, and sensor networks. Thus, limits on capacity, optimal routing policies, and performance with finite buffers are key issues and are add ...

An important field of application for wireless sensor networks is environmental monitoring. Given the importance of potential climate changes, environmental impact on cities, and pollution, it is an application domain where sensor networks can have great i ...

The successful deployment of a wireless sensor network is a difficult task, littered with traps and pitfalls. Even a functional network does not guarantee gathering meaningful data. In SensorScope, with its high-mountain campaigns, we have acquired invalua ...

Traditional distributed source coding rarely considers the possible link between separate encoders. However, the broadcast nature of wireless communication in sensor networks provides a free gossip mechanism which can be used to simplify encoding/decoding ...
