Understanding seismic risk at both the national and sub-national level is essential for devising effective strategies and interventions aimed at its mitigation. The Earthquake Risk Model of Switzerland (ERM-CH23), released in early 2023, is the culmination ...

The paper presents the results of the evaluation of the seismic safety of the Ancien Hôpital de Sion, an important Swiss architectural heritage building, sited in the Canton of Valais, the region with the highest seismic hazard in Switzerland. Three-dimens ...

Seismic exposure of buildings presents difficult engineering challenges. The principles of seismic design involve structures that sustain damage and still protect inhabitants. Precise and accurate knowledge of the residual capacity of damaged structures is ...

To overcome the problem of outlier data in the regression analysis for numerical-based damage spectra, the C4.5 decision tree learning algorithm is used to predict damage in reinforced concrete buildings in future earthquake scenarios. Reinforced concrete ...

The development of fragility curves to perform seismic scenario-based risk assessment requires a fully probabilistic procedure in order to account for uncertainties at each step of the computation. This is especially true when developing fragility curves c ...

An efficient implementation of the capacity design requires high ductility combined with a low overstrength of the critical regions. Conventional timber connections do not generally offer such ideal combination, resulting in modest behaviour and relatively ...

Fling-step and forward directivity, which can impose unexpected seismic demands on structures, are the main consequences of near-fault earthquakes. Although the adverse effect of forward directivity on structures behavior is determined to some level, the i ...

A large number of buildings in regions with low to medium seismic hazard have been designed without considering earthquake actions. Retrofitting of all buildings that fail to meet modern code requirements is economically, technically and environmentally un ...

This paper addresses seismic vulnerability assessment at an urban scale and more specifically the capacity curves involved for building damage prediction. Standard capacity curves are a function of predefined building typology and are proposed in the Risk- ...

Structural damage usually happens during earthquake events. This had caused damage of properties and even worse, loss of lives. Usually, the greatest losses were not caused by the quake specifically, but rather because of the fall of the structures. The vu ...

The prediction of non-linear seismic demand using linear elastic behavior for the determination of peak non-linear response is widely used for seismic design as well as for vulnerability assessment. Existing methods use either linear response based on init ...

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, have always represented a danger to human life. Seismic risk assessment consists of the evaluation of existing buildings and their expected response in case of an earthquake; the exposure model of buildings plays a k ...

The behavior of seven one-half scale masonry specimens before and after retrofitting using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is investigated. Four walls were built using one-half scale hollow clay masonry units and weak mortar to simulate walls built in centr ...

This paper compares different models currently used to calculate the shear strength of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls retrofitted using fiber reinforced polymers (URM-FRP). The shear strengths of six recently tested URM-FRP walls were compared to shear s ...

Seismic assessment of existing heritage buildings remains a challenging task. There is a high level of complexity and uncertainty compared with the assessment of standard buildings. Heritage masonry churches are usually prone to partial collapses during ea ...

Earthquake-design approaches in regions with low to medium seismic hazard often focus on the protection of inhabitants. Therefore, some structural damage is accepted. In addition, large parts of the building stock have usually been built without considerin ...
