The foreseen important increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energies technologies into the electricity distribution grid is expected to lead to some major challenges. On the one hand, a large and synchronous production could lead in certain ...

Multi-energy networks are going to play an important role in dense areas (cities) for the energy transition and the integration of renewable energy sources [1]. The IntegrCiTy project uses a co-simulation approach at urban scale in order to maximize the pe ...

Based on the analysis of the reference case, models developed at the PVLAB-EPFL and IPESEEPFL have been valued and improved to assess the impact of distributed generation and ancillary services on REel demonstrator. The models are used to evaluate solution ...

Policy makers and energy operator have the responsibility to select indicators for their mission to lead the renewable energy transition ensuring energy independence and security of supply in the context of decarbonisation of the energy mix and and/or nucl ...

This presentation gives an overview of the design of district-level multi-energy systems and relevant key performance indicators capable of providing flexibility to the power system to enhance the grid operation. The proposed data-driven "District to Grid" approach evaluates major energy options at building levels, and delves into the evolution of the energy distribution, storage, behavioral flexibility and alternative pricing to avoid carbon emissions and increase the self-consumption at the scale of the n

The objective of the AIDRES database is to support the EU-27's long-term goal of achieving a fully integrated industrial strategy. It serves as a valuable resource for the European Commission and industries, offering insights into the effectiveness, effici ...

The increasing use of renewable energy is a deep going trend mainly supported by the sustained annual growth rate of solar photovoltaic, wind power and biogases. The expansion and evolution of the distribution grids is therefore a key issue to ensure a sec ...

This study addresses the safety issue for the realization of a CO2 heat distribution system in the NEST research and innovation building. It is based on consideration around the concept of CO2 network developed at LENI/IPESE-EPFL and takes advantage from t ...

This report provides a selection of relevant energy, environmental and economic key performance indicators to support scenario analysis and decision-making process of the IntegrCity platform. The selected indicators have been identified from standards, nor ...

Industrial process integration based on mixed integer linear programming has been used for decades to design and improve industrial processes. The technique has later been extended to solve multi-period and multi-scale problems for the design of urban ener ...

The NEST building laboratory of Empa and Eawag is a modular research and innovation demonstrator where new technologies, materials and systems are tested, researched, honed and validated in realistic conditions. In the NEST concept, only the supporting str ...

The expected increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energy technologies into the electricity grid is expected to lead to major challenges. As a main stakeholder, authorities often lack the appropriate tools to frame and encourage the transiti ...

The integration of steam cycles in the power plant industry aims at optimizing the conversion of the available heat into mechanical power. The proposed method uses process integration techniques and a multi-objective optimisation procedure to generate opti ...

There is a need by distribution system operators and power suppliers to propose ancillary services to enhanced grid operation allowing the optimal deployment of photovoltaic panels, cogeneration technologies and distributed storage. This deliverable theref ...

This article integrates solar potential in a given urban area for the competing technologies of Photovoltaic and thermal collectors. On an urban level, scalable from several buildings to whole cities, the authors examine the possibility of solar power inte ...

Following the pioneering work "Tokyo Half Project" promoted by the Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS), a geographical information system has been developed to model the energy requirements of urban areas. The purpose of this platform is to model with ...

Traditional control approaches heavily rely on hard-coded expert knowledge, complicating the development of optimal control solutions as system complexity increases. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) offers a selflearning control solution, proving advantag ...

Following the pioneering work of the AGS Tokyo half project, a geographical information system has been developed to model the energy requirements of an urban area. The purpose of the platform is to model with sufficient detail the energy services requirem ...
