Despite numerous discussions, workshops, reviews and reports about responsible development of nanotechnology, information describing health and environmental risk of engineered nanoparticles or nanomaterials is severely lacking and thus insufficient for completing rigorous risk assessment on their use. However, since preliminary scientific evaluations indicate that there are reasonable suspicions that activities involving nanomaterials might have damaging effects on human health; the precautionary principle

Available risk analysis techniques are well adapted to industry since they were developed for its purpose. All hazards met in industry are also present in research/academia (although quantities of some hazardous substances are smaller). Still, because of i ...

Synchrotron‐based X‐ray Tomographic Microscopy (SRXTM) is nowadays a powerful technique for non‐destructive, high‐resolution investigations of a broad kind of materials. High‐brilliance and high‐coherence third generation synchrotron radiation facilities a ...

Can individual cells, including live cells, be imaged using hard x rays? Common wisdom until now required sophisticated staining techniques for this task. We show instead that individual cells and cell details can be detected in culture solution and tissues with no staining and no other contrast-enhancing preparation. The sample examined can be much thicker than for many other microscopy techniques without sacrificing the capability to resolve cells. The key factor in our approach is the use of a coherent s

As the number of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) used in research increases with an incredible speed, health and safety specialists are continuously faced with the challenge of evaluating the risks involved with these materials. Nowadays there is not enough ...

In this work, we present a practical and engineering risk management procedure for a university-wide safety and health management of nanomaterials, developed as a multi-stakeholder effort (government, accident insurance, researchers and experts for occupational safety and health). It provides the identification and evaluation of potential hazards and establishes effective control mechanisms to ensure protection of the employee and the environment. The process, similar to control banding approach, starts usi

There is a need for a risk analysis technique specific for academic research laboratories. Since accurate accident data, normally required for quantitative risk analysis, are not available for this environment, expert judgements are often used to describe ...

Broadband synchrotron X-rays with limited coherence can be used for high resolution phase contrast radiology. Our experimental results confirm the prediction that the extreme spatial coherence of third-generation synchrotron sources although helpful but not strictly necessary for refraction-based or diffraction-based edge enhancement. Source with rather limited lateral coherence can produce Fresnel diffraction fringes. The direct observation of the same fringes using broadband synchrotron lights demonstrate

Background: It is still unknown which types of nanomaterials and associated doses represent an actual danger to humans and environment. Meanwhile, there is consensus on applying the precautionary principle to these novel materials until more information is ...

Current available risk analysis techniques are well adapted to industry needs since they were developed for its purpose. All hazards present in industry are also met in research/academia, although quantities of some hazardous substances are smaller. Still, because of its characteristics e.g., high turnover of collaborators, rapid reorientation of research programs, freedom of research, equipment often in development stage, difficulty to obtain accidents statistics, not well described processes, etc., resear

A new methodology for risk analysis, namely Laboratory Assessment and Risk Analysis - LARA, is proposed in the companion paper to assess risks in research/academia environment. The core of this methodology relies on defining the adequate role player factors to assess risks in research environment and their mathematical combination to quantify and assess the risk. Quantitative outcome of the analysis results in a Lab Criticity Index - LCI, constructed as a rather comprehensive function of probability, severi

Since the rise of occupational safety and health research on nanomaterials a lot of progress has been made in generating health effects and exposure data. However, when detailed quantitative risk analysis is in question, more research is needed, especially ...

The changes in phase contrast X-ray images as the photon energy is changed were observed and analyzed. Such results were justified in part with a preliminary model based on the interplay of refraction and absorption effects. The observed change may open up interesting opportunities for chemical analysis based on phase contrast images taken at different absorption edges.

Coherent x-rays from synchrotron sources are increasingly used in non-conventional radiological techniques ('phase-contrast' radiology). Our experiments demonstrate that by using white (unmonochromatic) radiation and a time-resolving system, it is possible to image microscopic details of moving blood vessels in different live animals without using any contrast agent. The images have excellent contrast plus unprecedented spatial resolution for microangiography (< 10 mum). This result is likely to impact many

Can the photon energy dependence of coherence-enhanced radiographs lead to elemental identification? Our tests pave the way to a positive response by showing that image details do change as the photon energy crosses an absorption threshold. The observed changes are explained by a simple model of the interplay between the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The advanced characteristics of synchrotron x-ray sources make it possible to implement radiology with powerful and innovative approaches. We review in simple terms the conceptual background of such approaches, then we present a number of selected examples. The practical tests concern life-sciences specimens as well as materials-science systems.
