Understanding the influence of running-induced acute fatigue on the homeostasis of the body is essential to mitigate the adverse effects and optimize positive adaptations to training. Fatigue is a multifactorial phenomenon, which influences biomechanical, ...

Background Stroke survivors often suffer from mobility deficits. Current clinical evaluation methods, including questionnaires and motor function tests, cannot provide an objective measure of the patients’ mobility in daily life. Physical activity performa ...

Background Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that affects the central nervous system, resulting in various symptoms. Among these, impaired mobility and fatigue stand out as the most prevalent. The progressive worsening of symptoms ad ...

Walking/gait speed is a key measure for daily mobility characterization. To date, various studies have attempted to design algorithms to estimate walking speed using an inertial sensor worn on the lower back, which is considered as a proper location for ac ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the alteration of the gait pattern in 25 children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, using body-worn inertial sensors during a long walking distance. Normalized spatiotemporal gait parameters and their variability we ...

Introduction: A reliable measurement of the physical activity in everyday life should allow a better assessment of the utility and the relevance of a number of medical treatments. Continuous 24-h recordings of posture and motion can be generally useful in behaviour assessment. Categorising body postures (sitting, standing and lying) and locomotion (walking) based on only one miniature kinematic sensor has been studied [1]. The purpose of this study is to improve the accuracy of that system and to provide ot

Background: Chronic pain, defined as persistent or recurrent pain lasting longer than 3 months, is a frequent condition affecting an important percent of population worldwide. Pain chronicity can be caused by many different factors and is a frequent compon ...

Chronic pain is a complex disabling experience that negatively affects the cognitive, affective and physical functions as well as behavior. Although the interaction between chronic pain and physical functioning is a well-accepted paradigm in clinical resea ...

Background: Knowledge about how older adults walk is crucial for the effective prevention and treatment of various mobility issues as well as treatment evaluation, but it is currently largely limited to laboratory-based measurements. Although laboratory-based data provide relevant information about what older adults can do under standardized conditions, they do not provide insight into how they actually walk in their daily life, a gap that needs to be addressed urgently. Objective: The objective of this stu

Background: Modern theories define chronic pain as a multidimensional experience - the result of complex interplay between physiological and psychological factors with significant impact on patients' physical, emotional and social functioning. The developm ...

Background: Measuring mobility in daily life entails dealing with confounding factors arising from multiple sources, including pathological characteristics, patient specific walking strategies, environment/context, and purpose of the task. The primary aim ...

The L-test is a performance-based measure to assess balance and mobility. Currently, the primary outcome from this test is the time required to finish it. In this study we present the instrumented L-test (iL-test), an L-test wherein mobility is evaluated b ...

BACKGROUND: Physical therapy interventions for ambulatory youth with cerebral palsy (CP) often focus on activity-based strategies to promote functional mobility and participation in physical activity. The use of activity monitors validated for this populat ...

Irregular sampling of time series in electronic health records (EHRs) presents a challenge for the development of machine learning models. Additionally, the pattern of missing data in certain clinical variables is not random, but depends on the decisions o ...

Background: The clinical validity of digital mobility outcomes (DMOs) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has yet to be established. Aim: To evaluate the construct validity of 24 DMOs measuring walking activity (number of steps, number of walking bouts (WB), WB duration) and gait (walking speed, cadence, stride length) in people with COPD by assessing convergent, divergent, and known-groups validity. Methods: 551 people with COPD were recruited from 7 European sites and monitored for 7-days in

Irregular sampling of time series in electronic health records (EHRs) is one of the main challenges for developing machine learning models. Additionally, the pattern of missing values in certain clinical variables is not at random but depends on the decisi ...

Background Impaired mobility increases falls and mortality risk. However, guidelines to reliably assess real-world walking activity and gait remain undefined. We aimed to (i) determine the minimum daily wear time during waking hours (7:00-22:00) for a valid measurement day, (ii) identify the minimum number of valid days, and (iii) weekend days, to reliably assess weekly walking activity and gait parameters, and (iv) provide recommendations for reliable realworld walking assessments. Methods Participants wit

The physical activity in normal daily life is determined to a large extent by the functional ability of a subject. As a result, the measurement of the physical activity that a subject performs spontaneously could be a useful and objective measurement of disability, particularly in patients with disease-related functional impairment. The aim of this study is to provide an accurate method for the measurement and analysis of the physical activity under normal life conditions. Using three kinematical sensors st

Background Recent advances in wearable technologies make it possible to accurately quantify real-world mobility performance through technically validated digital mobility outcomes (DMOs). Aim To evaluate the construct validity (convergent, divergent, and known-groups validity) of 24 DMOs quantifying walking activity (amount and pattern) and gait (pace, rhythm, and bout-to-bout variability) in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods Part of the Mobilise-D observational cohort study,

Objective, continuous assessment of real-world mobility using wearables has significant potential to transform clinical research and practice, yet the field lacks standardised, open-source tools that enable reproducible algorithm real-world validation, across multiple clinical cohorts. This would improve transparency around definitions and performance, thereby enhancing interpretation and more meaningful comparison across studies. The Mobilise-D consortium validated a comprehensive analytical pipeline for e
