Over the past century, the use of flat slabs in buildings and especially in parking garages has been growing as it is an economic and efficient solution. Flat slabs are easy to build and have, through their smaller depth, an economical and architectural ad ...

The punching shear resistance formulation provided by Model Code 2010 is calibrated on the basis of experimental tests on isolated slabs supported on columns. According to Level of Approximation approach, several quantities are required for the design punc ...

This paper investigates the mechanical behaviour and the load-carrying mechanisms of reinforced concrete slabs by means of shear fields. The suitability of various shear fields obtained from different approaches (elastic and plastic theory) is investigated ...

Bending behaviour of members without ordinary reinforcement made of quasi-brittle materials (such as concrete or fibre-reinforced concrete) is subjected to size effect both in terms of strength and ductility. For a typical ultra-high performance fibre-rein ...

Arch-shaped members are used in many reinforced concrete structures such as tunnels, bridges, silos, or offshore constructions. They are generally designed to carry significant axial forces, and, in most cases, are not provided with transverse reinforcemen ...

The paper presents a study on the tensile behavior of UHPC conducted at the structural concrete laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). Material tests and tests on structural members with reinforcement bars have been performed. A schematic representation of the material behavior allows a general description of the behavior of structural members in tension. The mechanical behavior for tension members and a simple model are presented.

Aggregate interlocking is considered as one of the most important shear transfer actions in cracked concrete members without shear reinforcement. This research project analyses the fundamentals of aggregate interlocking by means of a specific experimental ...

The communication shows an alternative for introducing soil-structure interaction in the analysis of cut-and-cover tunnels. An uncoupled method is illustrated through two examples representative of the situations found in practice. The main features of eac ...

Isolated footings are reinforced concrete elements whose flexural and punching shear strengths are usually governing for their design. In this work, both failure modes and their interaction are investigated by means of the kinematical theorem of limit anal ...

Many theories and empirical formulae have been proposed to estimate the shear strength of reinforced concrete members without transverse reinforcement. It can be noted that these approaches differ not only in the resulting design expressions, but also on t ...

Shear has been observed to be the governing failure mode of RC cantilever deck slabs of bridges without shear reinforcement when subjected to concentrated loads of heavy vehicles. This observation has been verified experimentally for a quasi-static applica ...

Punching shear reinforcement is increasingly used in flat slabs as an effective solution to increase their strength and deformation capacity. Several punching shear reinforcing systems have been developed in the past, such as studs, stirrups or bent-up bar ...

Reinforced concrete flat slab structures are used widely in construction projects due to their economic and functional advantages. Punching shear failure in such structures can have catastrophic effects in the case of, for example, multi-storey framed stru ...

The influence of shear on the rotation capacity of one-way slabs without shear reinforcement is investigated in this paper by means of an experimental study. The experimental program consisted of 11 slab strips 8400 mm (331 in.) long and 450 mm (17.7 in.) ...

Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is a recent evolution of ordinary reinforced concrete. This relatively new construction material replaces steel reinforcement with high-strength, non-corrosive textile fabrics in order to reduce cover requirements to minim ...

A large number of medium and small span bridges in Switzerland and in other countries are slab bridges, often prestressed, multi-span and supported by columns. Punching in such structures is typically governing at failure. So far, the knowledge of the infl ...

Crack formation and development in reinforced concrete structures is a complex mechanism affected by a large number of factors. Typically, the estimation of the crack width as a function of the reinforce-ment stress state is based on simplified assumptions ...

This paper investigates the behaviour of concrete failing under high stress levels and subjected to different types of loading. The aim of this investigation is to clarify the development of linear and nonlinear creep strains and how they relate to materia ...
