Diamond films with different levels of doping have been the subject of applications and fundamental research in electrochemistry, opening up a new branch known as the electrochemistry of diamond. The electrochemical properties of diamond mostly depend on the operating conditions during the deposition of the film and on the treatment of the surface. The absence so far of a standard procedure in the production and treatment of diamond films has created a wide range of diamond quality and properties. This work

Boron-doped diamond electrodes, both as-grown and polarized anodically under different conditions, were prepd. in order to study the chem. and electrochem. changes of diamond and clarify the role played by the surface-state d. Many different treatments were employed: as-grown (BDDag), mildly polarized (BDDmild), strongly polarized in perchloric acid (BDDsevere), and strongly polarized in a sulfuric acid-acetic acid mixt. (BDDAcOH). Charge transfer processes at the electrode surface were studied by cyclic vo

The electrochem. oxidn. of EDTA was studied at boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry in the potential region of water stability showed that EDTA is oxidized in an irreversible 2-electron-transfer mechanism. No fouling phenomena were noticed on the electrode surface. At high anode potential, an oxidn. mechanism of EDTA involving hydroxyl radicals, formed during water discharge, was proposed. The model previously developed for org. oxidn. at nonactive anodes was successfully used in order t

In the search for a good dimensionally stable anode-type electrode, p-silicon (1-3 mW cm) has been chosen as the substrate material due to its high anodic stability and its reasonable cost compared to titanium and tantalum. Several p-Si/IrO2 electrodes have been prepd. by thermal decompn. at different temp. The effect of prepn. temp. on the morphol. and electrochem. properties has been investigated by SEM anal., X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry in 1 M HClO4 showing that p-Si/IrO2 prepd. at 450 DegC

The concept of non-diamond sp2 impurity states as charge transfer mediators on boron-doped diamond (BDD) surface was suggested as an explanation for the electrochem. behavior of synthetic diamond-based electrodes. To verify this concept, graphite particles (sp2) were deposited on diamond electrodes (sp3) by mech. abrasion. The behavior of the so prepd. diamond-graphite composite electrodes were compared with those of as-grown (BDDag) and those after mild anodic polarization (BDDmild). Outer-sphere electron

The Cl2 evolution reaction was studied at highly boron-doped diamond thin film electrodes. The comparison of this carbonaceous material with graphite and glassy carbon points out the similar behavior in terms of diagnostic parameters and related mechanisms, without the mech. fragility of these materials. Tafel slopes at different chloride concns. in soln. (from 0.1-4 M NaCl in 0.01 M HClO4) and at different pHs were detd., together with the reaction orders with respect to Cl- and H+. All measurements were c

A review. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin films were grown on various substrates by chem. vapor deposition to achieve a new electrode material that possesses unique electrochem. properties. This electrodes could generate hydroxyl radicals under polarization at high anode potentials, and these hydroxyl radicals could be spin-trapped by 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO). The generated hydroxyl radicals had low electrochem. activity and high chem. reactivity, and these properties were attributed to the we

The electrochem. behavior of some model org. compds. on boron-doped synthetic diamond thin film electrodes, obtained by HF-CVD on p-Si substrate was investigated. Only reactions involving simple electron transfer like hydroquinone/benzoquinone are active in the potential region of the supporting electrolyte stability, although this system is irreversible on diamond electrodes. For oxidn. reactions with more complex mechanism, diamond electrodes show no electrocatalytic activity in the potential region of th

The electropolishing of a B-doped diamond (BDD) film deposited by CVD was studied in HOAc-H2SO4 media. The electropolished surface was characterized by SEM, XPS, and electrochem. measurements. In 1 M H2SO4 no polishing of the surface occurred even after prolonged time; on the contrary, in electrolyte contg. 3 M HOAc in 1 M H2SO4 the morphol. changed rapidly. The surface became smoother and the roughness decreased as the typical results of a polishing process. All the nondiamond impurities were also removed

The electrochem. properties of IrO2 and RuO2 nanoparticles, deposited on synthetic B-doped diamond (BDD) surfaces, are discussed. After a description of the prepn. procedure and the morphol. characterization of BDD/IrO2 and BDD/RuO2 samples, the dispersion efficiency of these oxides on BDD was estd. for different loading, using cyclic voltammetry. The electrochem. behavior of 1,4-benzoquinone/hydroquinone redox couple, oxygen evolution, and orgs. oxidn. reactions were studied at BDD/IrO2 samples; in turn, t

Two methods were used for the deposition of Pt particles on synthetic B-doped diamond (BDD) surfaces: chem. deposition and electrodeposition under potentiostatic conditions. However, electrodeposition leads much higher Pt dispersion than chem. deposition. The mechanism of nucleation and growing of the electrodeposited Pt was studied by chronoamperometric studies in acid medium. The electrodeposition on diamond surfaces shows a mechanism of progressive nucleation as deduced from the chronoamperometric studie

Synthetic boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin film electrodes were tested for the electrogeneration of silver(II). In nitric acid, the kinetics of the silver(I)/silver(II) couple were studied by cyclic voltammetry. The results demonstrate that silver(II) can be produced with high current efficiency by silver(I) oxidn. at BDD electrodes. At low concn. of nitric acid and high concn. of silver(I), AgO is formed on the electrode surface. [on SciFinder (R)]

The electrochem. properties of IrO2 nanoparticles deposited on a synthetic boron-doped diamond surface (BDD/IrO2) were investigated. After a description of the prepn. procedure by thermal decompn. technique, the morphol. characterization of the samples by SEM and TEM was discussed. The electrochem. behavior of the redox system 1,4-benzoquinone/hydroquinone (Q/H2Q) was studied on BDD electrodes with a different IrO2 loading. The kinetics parameters such the transfer coeffs. a and b and the reaction rate cons

Synthetic B-doped diamond thin film electrodes were tested for electroanal. detection of 2-naphthol. This redox reaction was studied by cyclic voltammetry in aq. acidic soln. Well-resolved oxidn. waves were obsd. and the voltammetric peaks exhibited naphthol concn. dependence. Linear calibration curves were obtained after a simple electrochem. anodic pretreatment. [on SciFinder (R)]

Deposition of small amts. of IrO2 clusters on the B-doped diamond (BDD) surface (BDD-IrO2 electrode) dramatically enhances both the O2 evolution reaction and the oxidn. of orgs. in the potential region of water decompn. The fact that BDD-IrO2 electrode behaves similarly to IrO2-DSA type electrodes suggests that the IrO2 clusters on the BDD surface act as redox catalysts in both oxygen evolution and orgs. oxidn. [on SciFinder (R)]

The electrochem. behavior of synthetic B-doped diamond thin-film electrode (BDD) was studied in acid media contg. 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and bulk electrolysis. The results showed that in the potential region of supporting electrolyte stability occur reactions involving the oxidn. of 4-CP to phenoxy radical and 1,4-benzoquinone. Polymeric materials, which result in electrode fouling, are also formed in this potential region. Electrolysis at high anodic potentials, in
