To be implemented at the industrial scale, any dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) must demonstrate long term reliability. For this purpose, a novel and fast DEA aging setup for high cycle tests has been developed. It monitors the in-plane strain and the change in electrode resistance of an expanding circle actuator (active area of approx. 10 mm^2) versus cycle number and drive voltage. A square voltage input signal of an amplitude up to 5 kV with resolution of 0.1% of full scale is applied to the tested ac

This work demonstrates dielectric elastomer actuators controlled by the world's first thin-film transistors on flexible substrate operating at 1kV, thereby enabling locally switching high-voltages on DEAs using a low control voltage. The high voltages required to drive DEAs limit their integration in complex systems, such as high resolution haptic displays and multiple-degree-of-freedom robotics. We report here a top-gate, thin-film transistor (TFT) with coplanar electrodes specifically designed to drive DE

Artificial muscles based on dielectric elastomers show enormous promise for a wide range of applications and are slowly moving from the lab to industry. One problem for industrial uptake is the expensive, rigid, heavy and bulky high voltage driver, sensor and control circuitry that artificial muscle devices currently require. One recent development, the Dielectric Elastomer Switch(es) (DES), shows promise for substantially reducing auxiliary circuitry and helping to mature the technology. DES are piezoresis

Zipping electrostatic actuators operate by bending flexible electrodes using electrostatic forces. This principle allows the use of a wide range of dielectric and conductive materials. Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques can be used to fabricate these a ...

A high-resolution flexible active skin with a matrix of 32x24 individually addressable tactile pixels on a 4 mm pitch is reported, based on shape memory polymer (SMP) actuators. The intrinsic multistable nature of SMPs, and their more than hundred-fold var ...

We review recent progress in miniaturized dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), sensors, and energy harvesters. We focus primarily on configurations where the large strain, high compliance, stretchability, and high level of integration offered by dielectr ...

Applying electrical fields is a simple and versatile method to manipulate and reconfigure optofluidic devices. Several methods to apply electric fields using electrodes on polymers or in the context of lab-on-a-chip devices exist. In this paper, we utilize an ion-implanted process to pattern electrodes within a fluidic channel made of polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS). Electrode structuring within the channel is achieved by ion implantation at a 40 degrees angle with a metal shadow mask. In previous work using t

The analytical formulas describing the behaviour of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are based on hyperelastic strain energy density functions. The analytical modelling of a DEA will only lead to meaningful results if the dielectric elastomer can be accurately represented by the chosen hyperelastic model and if its parameters are carefully matched to the elastomer. In the case of silicone elastomers, we show that the strain energy density of a thin elastomeric membrane depends on the maximum deformatio

Dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs) are known for their large strains, low mass and high compliance, making them very attractive for a broad range of applications, from soft robotics to tuneable optics, or energy harvesting. However, 15 years after the first major paper in the field, commercial applications of the technology are still scarce, owing to high driving voltages, short lifetimes, slow response speed, viscoelastic drift, and no optimal solution for the compliant electrodes. At the EPFL's Micro

We present the development of a mechanically active bioreactor. Using dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA), we are able to mechanically perturb cell cultures in a controlled environment. With tailored pre-strain and compliant electrodes, it is possible to digitally control the strain state of the cell culture substrate and generate tensile strain exceeding 20%. This bioreactor enables new types of studies of cytomechanics. Specifically, we will use the bioreactor to study cellular mechanisms of cardiac arrh

We present a technique for stamping patterned silicone elastomer membranes with thicknesses ranging from 1 to 10 um. Silicone elastomers are becoming the material of choice for dielectric elastomer transducers. The variety of readily available materials, their versatility in terms of film thicknesses and their excellent mechanical properties have made them a very appealing alternative to the widely used acrylic elastomer VHB from 3M. Silicone films are typically blade casted or spin coated, two complementar

This contribution demonstrates the fabrication process of dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs). DETs are stretchable capacitors consisting of an elastomeric dielectric membrane sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. The large actuation strains of ...

Starfish and octopuses control their infinite degree of- freedom arms with panache—capabilities typical of nature where the distribution of reflex-like intelligence throughout soft muscular networks greatly outperforms anything hard, heavy, and man-made. Dielectric elastomer actuators show great promise for soft artificial muscle networks. One way to make them smart is with piezo-resistive Dielectric Elastomer Switches (DES) that can be combined with artificial muscles to create arbitrary digital logic circ

Dielectric elastomer generators (DEG) are suited for harvesting energy from low frequency and high strain natural sources including wind, wave and human movement. The stack configuration, for instance, in which a number of layers of DE membrane are placed one atop the other, offers a robust, compact and solid-state way for arranging the DE material for energy harvesting during heel strike. But the end conditions at top and bottom of a stack can substantially limit its ability to strain. Using an analytical

We report on the characterization, active tuning and modeling of the first mode resonance frequency of dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) membranes. Unlike other resonance frequency tuning techniques, the tuning procedure presented here requires no ex ...

We present a novel configuration of a dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) using electrodes made of a shape-memory polymer. DEAs are an efficient class of flexible electromechanical transducer. They have been incorporated into a variety of elegant devices, such as microfluidic devices, tunable optics, haptic displays, and minimum-energy grippers, to name a few. Dielectric elastomer minimum energy structures (DEMES) take advantage of the prestretch of the dielectric elastomer actuator to bend a non-stretchabl

We present a model and its experimental validation for the optimization of the in-plane displacement of a rigid platform mounted on a compact dielectric elastomer actuator. Unlike the situation in which the mechanical prestretch of the membrane is maintain ...

The development of thin-film dielectric elastomer strain sensors for the characterization of smooth muscle cell (SMC) contraction is presented here. Smooth muscle disorders are an integral part of diseases such as asthma and emphysema. Analytical tools enabling the characterization of SMC function i.e. contractile force and strain, in a low-cost and highly parallelized manner are necessary for toxicology screening and for the development of new and more effective drugs. The main challenge with the design of

We present an automated system to measure the degradation of compliant electrodes used in dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) over millions of cycles. Electrodes for DEAs generally experience biaxial linear strains of more than 10%. The decrease in elect ...

The application of electrical fields within a microfluidic channel enables many forms of manipulation necessary for lab-on-a-chip devices. Patterning electrodes inside the microfluidic channel generally requires multi-step optical lithography. Here, we uti ...
