Electron spin resonance with a scanning tunneling microscope (ESR-STM) combines the high energy resolution of spin resonance spectroscopy with the atomic scale control and spatial resolution of STM. Here we describe the upgrade of a helium-3 STM with a 2D ...

Lanthanide atoms on surfaces are an exceptional platform for atomic-scale magnetic information storage. However, their potential as qubits remains unexplored due to the limited number of experimental setups that can coherently drive the spins of single ada ...

We combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy with quantum master equation analysis to investigate the spin dynamics of the single atom magnet Dy on graphene/Ir(111). By performing reading and writing experiments, we show that the strongly spin p ...

We report on the magnetic properties of HoCo dimers as a model system for the smallest intermetallic compound of a lanthanide and a transition metal atom. The dimers are adsorbed on ultrathin MgO(100) films grown on Ag(100). New for 4f elements, we detect ...

We present the first experimental determination of the intra-atomic exchange energy between the inner 4f and the outer 6s5d shells in rare-earth elements. Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy on individual rare-earth atoms adsorbed on metal-supported ...

The magnetic quantum states of holmium single atom magnets on MgO(100) have proven extremely robust when exposed to high magnetic fields and temperatures up to 35 K. Here we address the stability of Ho at small magnetic fields, where the hyperfine interact ...

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy at 5 and 50 K, we studied the linewidth of unoccupied quantum-well states in ultrathin Pb islands, grown on Si(111) on two different Pb/Si interfaces. A quantitative analysis of the differential conduct ...

Tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) induce luminescence from C-60 and C-70 molecules forming fullerene nanocrystals grown on ultrathin NaCl films on Au(111). Intramolecular. uorescence and phosphorescence associated with the tran ...

We use rotational excitation spectroscopy with a scanning tunneling microscope to investigate the rotational properties of molecular hydrogen and its isotopes physisorbed on the surfaces of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), grown on Ni(111), Ru(0001), and Rh(111). The rotational excitation energies are in good agreement with Delta J = 2 transitions of freely spinning p-H-2 and o-D-2 molecules. The variations of the spectral line shapes for H-2 among the different surfaces can be traced back to a

The growth of rubrene (C42H28, 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene) multilayer islands up to a thickness of six layers on a Au(111) surface has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The molecules self-organize in parallel twin rows, forming mirr ...

We report on the magnetic coupling between isolated Co atoms as well as small Co islands and Ni(111) mediated by an epitaxial graphene layer. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and scanning tunneling microscopy combined with density functional theory calcul ...

We report on the structural and electronic properties of the Bi/Au(110)-1 x 4 surface, by combining scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The analysis of the precursor 1 x 8 moire struc ...

We present a scanning tunneling microscope operating in a 3He cryostat at a base temperature of 0.4 K, suitable for electron spin resonance (ESR) [S. Baumann, W. Paul, T. Choi, C. P. Lutz, A. Ardavan, and A. J. Heinrich, Science 350, 417 (2015)], quantum s ...

The growth of fullerene nanocrystals, composed of only C-60, only C-70, or a mixture of both fullerenes, has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The nanocrystals, formed on a NaCl ultrathin layer partially covering a Au(111) surface, ...

The low-temperature adsorption of isolated transition metal adatoms (Mn, Co, and Fe) onto hexagonal boron nitride monolayers on Rh(111) creates a bistable adsorption complex. The first state considerably weakens the hexagonal boron nitride- (h-BN-) substra ...

The melting transition of Ce adatom superlattices stabilized by long-range substrate-mediated electronic interactions on Cu(111) and Ag(111) noble metal surfaces has been investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, density functional the ...

The energy gap Delta of superconducting Pb islands grown on Si(111) was probed in situ between 5 and 60 monolayers by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Delta was found to decrease from its bulk value as a function of inverse island thickness ...

A permanent magnet retains a substantial fraction of its saturation magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. Realizing magnetic remanence in a single atom allows for storing and processing information in the smallest unit of matter. We s ...

Surface-state-mediated interactions influence the spatial distribution of adatoms at surfaces. These indirect interactions are the driving force for the creation of superlattices of individual adsorbed atoms when the adatom concentration, the sample temperature, and the adatom diffusion barrier are in a subtle balance, as it has been first reported for Ce adatoms on Ag(1 1 1). The conditions for the formation of such superlattices are discussed. Specifically, the adatom concentration is shown to modify cons

Coverage-dependent self-assembly of rubrene molecules on different noble metal surfaces, Au(111) and Au(100), Ag(111) and Ag(100), is presented. On Au(111), the homochiral supramolecular assemblies evolve with increasing rubrene coverage from very small structures composed of a few molecules, to honeycomb islets, and to one-dimensional chains of supramolecular pentamers. At higher coverage, the racemic mixture of molecules forms close-packed islands. On Au(100), chains of pentamers and two different types o
