The in situ matrix flow stress of continuous fibre-reinforced aluminium is measured in tension along the fibre axis. We use a new, tighter, estimate for the effect differential Poisson contraction between fibres and matrix and take into consideration nonli ...

The tensile failure of unidirectional alumina fibre reinforced aluminium is studied in uniaxial loading along the fibre axis. The tensile strength is measured as a function of matrix yield strength, which is varied by varying the testing temperature, from ...

The influence of particle size and particle type on the fracture toughness of aluminium matrix composites is investigated using model composites of 99.99% purity aluminium reinforced with particles of alumina and boron carbide. These composites are produced by gas pressure infiltration, and feature a volume fraction of reinforcement near 50 vol pet. The average particle size is varied between 5 and 35 mum. Fracture properties are determined using the single specimen J-integral test method. Observations of c

We present an analytical micromechanical model designed to simulate the tensile stress-strain behaviour and failure of damaging composites containing a high volume fraction of reinforcing particles. One internal damage micromechanism is considered, namely ...

A computational analysis of the longitudinal deformation of continuous fibre reinforced metals is presented. Elastic and elastic-plastic matrix behaviour are considered. Analytical approaches are confronted with finite element analyses (FEA) for varying fi ...

Scaling exponents for the conductivity and stiffness of replicated microcellular materials exceed commonly predicted values of 1 and 2. We show here that this is caused by the fact that, in replicated microcellular materials, the solid architecture varies ...

In this work we develop a methodology to probe the strength and toughness of microscopic brittle phases by combining focused ion beam (FIB) milling methods with microtesting techniques and finite element simulation. We present results from tests conducted on alumina fibres and compare data thus obtained with known macroscopic fibre properties derived from tensile tests conducted on long sections of the fibres. The developed methodology is to be transposed towards the microscopic mechanical testing of irregu

Circumferentially notched cylindrical bars of high volume fraction Al2O3 particle reinforced aluminium are tested in tension to probe the role of tensile stress triaxiality on damage and failure of such materials. The transverse strain is monitored with a ...

Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites (PRMMCs) are produced by high-pressure infiltration of ceramic particle beds. Matrix materials are either pure Al or Al-4,5%Cu, and the reinforcement is made either of angular or of polygonal alumina particles. The resulting composites feature a high volume fraction (40-60%) of uniformly distributed reinforcement. These materials accumulate damage during deformation, in the form of particle cracking or matrix voiding; localization of damage induces final failure.

A simplified model is proposed to quantity the effect of damage in the form of particle cracking on the elastic and plastic behaviour of particle-reinforced metal matrix composites under uniaxial tensile loading: cracked particles are simply replaced, in a ...

We show that steel-magnesium alloy laminated metal composites (LMCs) can be produced by gas pressure infiltration of a liquid magnesium alloy between layers of stacked dimpled steel sheets. Resulting LMCs are amenable to subsequent warm rolling. The LMCs a ...

The flow and failure behaviour of replicated pure aluminium foams in the presence of holes and notches is explored, varying the pore size and the notch depth or hole radius. Flat dog-bone tensile specimens containing a cylindrical hole, and cylindrical V-n ...

We measure, using an adaptation of a method designed for ceramic ball bearings, the local strength of a brittle second phase that serves to reinforce a metal. The method uses focused ion beam milling and a nanoindentation device, and is free of artifacts c ...

A method is presented for studying fibre damage in continuous fibre reinforced composites. It is based on contrasting the transmission of light through intact translucent fibres with the light through fractured or dead-ended fibres. The method is applied in order to detect processing-induced fibre fractures in aluminium reinforced with continuous alumina fibres.

The influence of the quench rate after solution treatment on the bendability of AA6016 aluminum alloy sheets was investigated. Crack initiation during bending tests is found to be independent of quench rate whereas crack propagation is decreased after rapi ...

Internal damage in uniaxial continuous alumina fibre-reinforced aluminium is measured by acoustic emission during tensile straining in the fibre direction. Over most of the loading history spatially uncorrelated fibre fragmentation occurs, consistent with ...

An overview is presented of current research at EPFL on structural metallic materials produced by infiltration processing. The paper comprises a brief introduction to the infiltration process, then presents results on particle reinforced metals and open-celled aluminium foams.
