This paper presents experimental studies on the fire behavior of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite laminates and unloaded cellular FRP components with internal liquid cooling. The experiments were conducted to verify the objective of liquid cooling ...

The effect of low-temperature curing on the physical characteristics of a commercial cold-curing epoxy adhesive was experimentally and analytically investigated with a view to a potential application in bridge construction in winter. Curing at low temperat ...

Balsa wood is an appropriate core material for structural sandwich applications due to its high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios. However, the mechanical properties vary considerably owing to the inherent scattering of natural wood materials. One a ...

The Mode I and II fracture behaviors of adhesively-bonded joints composed of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates were experimentally investigated using Double-Cantilever-Beam (DCB) and End-Loaded-Split (ELS) specimens. The large speci ...

A numerical investigation was carried out in order to simulate experimental results previously obtained concerning two-dimensional (2D) in-plane crack propagation in laminated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates. The laminated plates were designed ...

This paper reports on the design and construction of a lightweight GFRP roof structure in Basel, Switzerland. The sandwich construction allowed for an integration of static, building physical and architectural functions that enabled the prefabrication of t ...

An analytical investigation of the buckling/wrinkling behavior of GFRP webs in cell-core sandwiches subjected to combined in-plane shear and bending stresses is conducted. Web-core panels are modeled as long orthotropic plates stabilized by a relatively th ...

An active fire protection system, liquid-cooling, was applied to pultruded GFRP tubes subjected to combined thermal and mechanical loading in order to maintain material temperature below the critical glass transition temperature. The use of an appropriate ...

This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations about the creep behaviour of sandwich panels comprising glass-fibre reinforced polymer faces and rigid polyurethane foam core for civil engineering applications. A full-scale sandwich panel was ...

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis was conducted on a polyurethane adhesive at different constant heating rates up to 100°C, covering the glass transition range. Different storage modulus degradation curves were obtained from different heating rates. The differen ...

The direct load transmission behavior of hybrid sandwich beams consisting of a bottom fiber-reinforced polymer skin and a top concrete skin was investigated experimentally. The sandwich core consisted of lightweight concretes of different brittleness (sand ...

Pseudo-ductile behavior in composite structural frames can be achieved by enabling their beam-column joints to exhibit nonlinear structural response due to progressive damage, by using pseudo-ductile adhesives. This study investigates the static behavior o ...

Adhesively bonded joints are being used increasingly in civil engineering structures, especially for joints comprising pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates. The layered material architecture, however, leads to a complex delamination fa ...

The rotational behavior of the web-flange junctions (WFJs) of a pultruded GFRP bridge deck system was investigated. The rotational response of three WFJ types was characterized. An experimental procedure based on three-point bending and cantilever experiments conducted on the web elements and simple analytical models was used. The WFJs generally exhibited non-rigid and nonlinear behavior. The overall moment-rotation relationships, rotational stiffness, strength and failure modes differed depending on the we

Tensegrity structures are spatial, reticulated, and lightweight structures that are composed of struts and cables. Stability is provided by a self-stress state between tensioned and compressed members obtained by prestress. Although the form finding of ten ...

An analytical approach to determine the in-plane stress field and thereby the lateral contraction of composite rectangular plates subjected to partially uniform tension is presented. This approach is based on the Green function hypothesis and is able to ac ...

Separation at the web-flange junction is a common failure mode of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced (GFRP) beams subjected to bending. The causes of this separation appear to depend on the presence of lateral supports to prevent lateral buckling. To clarify ...

A new DSC-based experimental method to efficiently establish the glass transition temperature, Tg, vs. curing degree, α, relationship for structural adhesives was developed. The method approaches the continuous Tg-α relationship with a trilinear curve esta ...

A model for predicting composite material strength degradation under elevated and high temperatures is proposed. This model is based on the morphology of the mixture of materials in different states. The degradation of resin-dominated shear strength can be ...

In this study, the temperature effect on the static and tension–tension fatigue behavior of basalt fiber‐reinforced epoxy polymer (BFRP) composites is investigated. The S–N curves, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation, and displacement increment with ...
