We consider the finite-temperature phase diagram of the S = 1/2 frustrated Heisenberg bilayer. Although this two-dimensional system may show magnetic order only at zero temperature, we demonstrate the presence of a line of finite-temperature critical point ...

We investigate the minus-sign problem that afflicts quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of frustrated quantum spin systems, focusing on spin S = 1/2, two spatial dimensions, and the extended Shastry-Sutherland model. We show that formulating the Hamilton ...

We study a quantum version of the three-state Potts model that includes as special cases the effective models of bosons and fermions on the square lattice in the Mott-insulating limit. It can be viewed as a model of quantum permutations with amplitudes J(p ...

We simulate the t-J model in two dimensions by means of infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) generalized to arbitrary unit cells, finding results similar to those previously obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for wide l ...

We present a numerical study of the SU(3) Heisenberg model of three-flavor fermions on the triangular and square lattice by means of the density-matrix renormalization group and infinite projected entangled-pair states. For the triangular lattice we confir ...

Under magnetic fields, quantum magnets often undergo exotic phase transitions with various kinds of order. The discovery of a sequence of fractional magnetization plateaus in the Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu2(BO3)(2) has played a central role in the hi ...

Using infinite projected entangled-pair states, we show that the Shastry-Sutherland model in an external magnetic field has low-magnetization plateaus which, in contrast to previous predictions, correspond to crystals of bound states of triplets, and not t ...

We simulate the Shastry-Sutherland model in two dimensions by means of infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS)-a variational tensor network method where the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the so-called bond dimension. Besides the wel ...

The main characteristic of Mott insulators, as compared to band insulators, is to host low-energy spin fluctuations. In addition, Mott insulators often possess orbital degrees of freedom when crystal-field levels are partially filled. While in the majority ...

Due to the unfavorable scaling of tensor-network methods with the refinement parameter M, new approaches are necessary to improve the efficiency of numerical simulations based on such states, in particular for gapless, strongly entangled systems. In one-di ...

Building on the growing evidence based on NMR, magnetization, neutron scattering, electron spin resonance, and specific heat that, under pressure, SrCu2(BO3)(2) has an intermediate phase between the dimer and the Neel phase, we study the competition betwee ...

Impurities often play a defining role in the ground states of frustrated quantum magnets. Studies of their effects are crucial in understanding of the phase diagram in these materials. SrCu2(BO3)(2), an experimental realization of the Shastry-Sutherland (S ...

The magnetization process of the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)(2) is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 118 T. A 1/2 plateau is clearly observed in the field range 84 to 108 T in addition to 1/8, 1/4, and 1/3 plateaus at lower fiel ...
