In orthopaedics, outcome evaluation is currently recognized as a major challenge to improve the knowledge both about injuries and treatments. For anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, various evaluation tools are available for routine uses: clinical ex ...

This study aimed to use the plantar pressure insole for estimating the three-dimensional ground reaction force (GRF) as well as the frictional torque (T-F) during walking. Eleven subjects, six healthy and five patients with ankle disease participated in th ...

The aim of this study was to develop an ambulatory system for the three-dimensional (3D) knee kinematics evaluation, which can be used outside a laboratory during long-term monitoring. In order to show the efficacy of this ambulatory system, knee function ...

Background: This study aimed to use plantar pressure analysis in relatively long-distance walking for objective outcome evaluation of ankle osteoarthritis treatments, i.e., ankle arthrodesis and total ankle replacement. Methods: Forty-seven subjects in fou ...

The joint angles of multi-segment foot models have been primarily described using two mathematical methods: the joint coordinate system and the attitude vector. This study aimed to determine whether the angles obtained through these two descriptors are com ...

Dynamics is a central aspect of ski jumping, particularly during take-off and stable flight. Currently, measurement systems able to measure ski jumping dynamics (e.g., 3D cameras, force plates) are complex and only available in few research centres worldwi ...

Venous cannula orifice obstruction is an underestimated problem during augmented cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), which can potentially be reduced with redesigned, virtually wall-less cannula designs versus traditional percutaneous control venous cannulas. A ...

3D kinematic and dynamic analysis is highly required in ski jumping. Current recording techniques (e.g. camera systems) suffered from limitations, such as volume capture or complexity of use and processing. This study proposed a new 3D approach based on in ...

Objective: To test whether subchondral bone mineral density (sBMD) and cartilage thickness (CTh) of femoral condyles are correlated in knees without and with severe medial femorotibial osteoarthritis (OA), using a subregional analysis with computerized tom ...

This study aimed to investigate the influence of ankle osteoarthritis (AOA) treatments, i.e., ankle arthrodesis (AA) and total ankle replacement (TAR), on the kinematics of multi-segment foot and ankle complex during relatively long-distance gait.Forty-five subjects in four groups (AOA, AA, TAR, and control) were equipped with a wearable system consisting of inertial sensors installed on the tibia, calcaneus, and medial metatarsals. The subjects walked 50-m twice while the system measured the kinematic para

Thanks to decades of research, gait analysis has become an efficient tool. However, mainly due to the price of the motion capture systems, standard gait laboratories have the capability to measure only a few consecutive steps of ground walking. Recently, w ...

Objective: To characterize the differences and correlations in osteophyte volumes between and within proximal tibial compartments, and to assess the correlations between osteophyte volumes and the femorotibial angle. Design: CT scans of 73 knees with predo ...

Many studies have shown the efficacy of orientation and three-dimensional joint angle measurement for patient evaluation or rehabilitation purposes. But currently, the use of these systems for routine practice is questionable. The commercially available de ...

Three-dimensional analysis of the entire sequence in ski jumping is recommended when studying the kinematics or evaluating performance. Camera-based systems which allow three-dimensional kinematics measurement are complex to set-up and require extensive po ...

This study aims to design a wearable system for kinetics measurement of multi-segment foot joints in long-distance walking and to investigate its suitability for clinical evaluations. The wearable system consisted of inertial sensors (3D gyroscopes and 3D ...

A new plastic self-expanding Smartcanula (Smartcanula LLC, Lausanne, Switzerland) is designed for central insertion and prevention of caval collapse. The objective of our work is to assess the influence of the new design on atrial chatter. Caval collapse o ...

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is most commonly injured during sporting activities such as football, ski, handball etc., when an athlete suddenly pivots or places excessive rotational force on his knee. The ACL can also be torn during severe trauma such as a car accident or as the result of a work injury. Switzerland’s primary accident insurer reports more than 3500 ACL injuries per year. An ACL injury generates knee instability which increases the risk of disease in menisci and cartilage and affects

Objective: To introduce an integrated joint system (IJS) model of joint health and osteoarthritis (OA) pathophysiology through a systematic review of the cross-sectional relationships among three knee properties (cartilage thickness, gait mechanics, and su ...

The present study proposes a method based on ski fixed inertial sensors to automatically compute spatio-temporal parameters (phase durations, cycle speed and cycle length) for the diagonal stride in classical cross-country skiing. The proposed system was v ...

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer great opportunities to analyze segmental and joints kinematics. When combined with another motion capture system (MCS), for example, to validate new IMU-based applications or to develop mixed systems, it is necessary ...
