This paper describes the development of a novel medical X-ray imaging system adapted to the needs and constraints of low and middle-income countries. The developed system is based on an indirect conversion chain: a scintillator plate produces visible light ...

In recent years, multi-atlas fusion methods have gained significant attention in medical image segmentation. In this paper, we propose a general Markov Random Field (MRF) based framework that can perform edge-preserving smoothing of the labels at the time ...

We study an adaptive statistical approach to analyze brain networks represented by brain connection matrices of interregional connectivity (connectomes). Our approach is at a middle level between a global analysis and single connections analysis by conside ...

Ultrafast ultrasound imaging achieves high frame rates but results in lower image quality compared to focused acquisitions. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as effective tools for reducing diffraction artifacts and enhancing the quality of ...

In this paper, we propose an analytical low-level representation of images, obtained by a decomposition process, here the matching pursuit (MP) algorithm, as a new way of describing objects through a general continuous description using an affine invariant dictionary of basis functions. This description is used to recognize objects in images. In the learning phase, a template object is decomposed, and the extracted subset of basis functions, called meta-atom, gives the description of our object. We then ext

Purpose Although several MRI methods have been explored to achievein vivomyelin quantification, imaging the whole brain in clinically acceptable times and sufficiently high resolution remains challenging. To address this problem, this work investigates the ...

In this paper, we advance the state of the art in variational image segmentation through the fusion of bottom-up segmentation and top-down classification of object behavior over an image sequence. Such an approach is beneficial for both tasks and is carrie ...

Quantitative MR relaxometry provides sensitive and reproducible measures of brain microstructure and is increasingly used in studies of ageing and neurodegenerative disease. However, normative brain atlases covering the adult lifespan remain scarce, especially from large, harmonized, multicenter datasets. This study aimed to establish lifespan‐based normative T 1 and T 2 atlases to support individualized assessment and group‐level comparisons. We retrospectively analyzed 947 healthy Han Chinese adults (421

Ultrafast ultrasound (US) revolutionized biomedical imaging with its capability of acquiring full-view frames at over 1 kHz, unlocking breakthrough modalities such as shear-wave elastography and functional US neuroimaging. Yet, it suffers from strong diffr ...

We present an approach for unsupervised segmentation of natural and textural images based on active contour, differential geometry and information theoretical concept. More precisely, we propose a new texture descriptor which intrinsically defines the geom ...

In this paper we present a novel geometric framework called geodesic active fields for general image registration. In image registration, one looks for the underlying deformation field that best maps one image onto another. This is a classic ill-posed inve ...

As early detection of breast cancer strongly favors successful therapeutic outcomes, there is major commercial interest in optimizing breast cancer screening. However, current risk prediction models achieve modest performance and do not incorporate digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) imaging, which was FDA-approved for breast cancer screening in 2011. To address this unmet need, we present a deep learning (DL)-based framework capable of forecasting an individual patient’s 5-year breast cancer risk directly f

Brain deformations induced by space-occupying lesions may result in unpredictable position and shape of functionally important brain structures. The aim of this study is to propose a method for segmentation of brain structures by deformation of a segmented ...

Over the last two decades, a large variety of type I error rates and control procedures have been proposed in the field of multiple hypotheses testing. This paper proposes a framework that includes many existing proposals by investigating procedures in whi ...

In this paper, we propose a new paradigm to carry out the registration task with a dense deformation field derived from the optical flow model and the active contour method. The proposed framework merges different tasks such as segmentation, regularization, incorporation of prior knowledge and registration into a single framework. The active contour model is at the core of our framework even if it is used in a different way than the standard approaches. Indeed, active contours are a well-known technique for

Ultrafast imaging based on plane-wave (PW) in- sonification is an active area of research due to its capability of reaching high frame rates. Several approaches have been proposed either based on either of Fourier-domain reconstruction or on delay-and-sum ...

In this report we focus on pedestrian head detection and tracking in video sequences. The task is not trivial in real and complex scenarios where the deformation induced by the perspective field requires a multi-scale analy- sis. Multi-scale shape models for the human head are considered to identify the correct size of the region of interest. Anisotropic diffusion is used as a pre-processing step and edge detection is performed using an automatic scale selection process. A non parametric statistical descrip

Axonal conduction velocity, which ensures efficient function of the brain network, is related to axon diameter. Noninvasive, in vivo axon diameter estimates can be made with diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, but the technique requires three-dimensional ...

Volumetric Ultrasound (US) imaging is an emerging tech- nology for medical US applications. Typically, US imaging is 2D, where a number of vibrating elements, arranged in an array, are used to scan 2D cross-sections of the human body. In volumetric US a matrix probe of vibrating elements is used instead of the array, where conical volumes are reconstructed instead of 2D cross-sections. Today, cardiology and obstetrics are the most benefiting applications from 3D imaging, where better assessment of chamber v

Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern in developing countries due to financial and human resource constraints. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) of the cervix was widely promoted and routinely used as a low-cost primary screening tes ...
