Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) contain complex mixtures of chemicals and release them to the environment, and potential toxic effects of these chemicals still need to be characterized. We used a standardized surrogate for TRWP,cryogenically milled tire ...

Formation of N-Nitrosamines in water and wastewater treatment is of concern due to their high carcinogenic potency, e.g., N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is estimated to be several hundred times more potent than the regulated trihalomethanes in drinking water. Rather than a direct release from specific sources, N-nitrosamines are known to be mainly formed in situ during disinfection processes such as chlorination, ozonation, etc. They are categorized as disinfection byproducts (DBPs). In principle, nitrosatio

In the Mekong delta, intensive shrimp farming rely heavily on a wide panel of antibiotics (ABs) to prevent disease epidemics. Consequently, large amounts of antibiotic multi-resistant bacteria are emerging, threatening adjacent aquatic habitats used for irrigation and drinking water, and potentially impairing human health. In this study, quantification of AB resistance genes (ARGs) was carried out for two consecutive years along the Vam Co River (Long An Province, Viet Nam), a river receiving several efflue

Tire wear particles, released at an estimated 6 million tons annually worldwide, introduce various chemical substances into agricultural environments through atmospheric deposition, road runoff, and reclaimed wastewater. These tire-derived compounds are kn ...

The adsorption and desorption behaviors of Phenanthrene and Pyrene onto polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microplastics in the simulated freshwater and digestive fluids (simulated gastic fluid (SGF), simulated intestinal fluid (SIF)) were studied. The second-order kinetic model described the sorption kinetics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the Langmuir model fitted the sorption isotherms of PAHs better, which indicated the surface

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) account for an important part of the polymer particles released into the environment. There are scientific knowledge gaps as to the potential bioaccessibility of chemicals associated with TRWP to aquatic organisms. This study investigated the solubilization and bioaccessibility of seven of the most widely used tire-associated organic chemicals and four of their degradation products from cryogenically milled tire tread (CMTT) into fish digestive fluids using an in vitro di

Pollution from past industrial activities can remain unnoticed for years or even decades because the pollutant has only recently gained attention or been identified by measurements. Modeling the emission history of pollution is essential for estimating population exposure and apportioning potential liability among stakeholders. This paper proposes a novel approach for reconstructing the history of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) pollution from municipal solid

Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are produced during the wear of tire rubber on the road pavement and contain various chemicals originating from the road environment and from the rubber. Toxic effects of TRWP and their associated chemicals on soil organ ...

Microplastics, especially aged microplastics can become vectors of heavy metals from environment to organisms with potential negative effects on food chain. However, a few studies focused on the bioavailability of adsorbed metals and most studies related to aged microplastics used artificial method that cannot entirely reflect actual aging processes. In this study, virgin polystyrene was aged by ozone (PS-O3), solar simulator (PS-SS) and lake (PS-Lake) to investigate adsorption of Cu by virgin, artificially

Global concerns regarding microplastics emerging in the environment have been raised recently. Using samples collected during the OceanXplorer mission in Aqaba, we explored the depth-based and regional variations of microplastics across pelagic and benthic zones. Microplastics (63.0-950.0 µm) from the surface seawater, middle seawater, bottom seawater, and deep-sea sediment were quantified and identified using a dissecting microscope and Fourier Transform Infrared microscope (µ-FTIR). The results revealed t

In this work, iron oxides have been proposed as low-cost heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for the simultaneous disinfection and reduction of microcontaminant load from urban wastewater in raceway pond reactors at near-neutral pH. The objective was not ...

In this study, nitrate formation from ammonium and/or dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was investigated as a novel surrogate parameter to evaluate the abatement of micropollutants during ozonation of synthetic waters containing natural organic matter (NOM) ...

Microplastics pollution in river systems has generated great concern; however, few studies have focused on the contributions of multiple influencing factors to microplastics in river systems. In the current study, we utilized data on microplastics in surfa ...

In the Mekong delta, inland-based shrimp breeding requires significant inflow of high-quality freshwater. In turn, discharge of substantial loads of poor-quality effluents negatively impacts adjacent water bodies and favors disease outbreaks. This project ...

Petroleum-based microplastic particles (MPs) are carriers of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments, influencing the selection and spread of antimicrobial resistance. This research characterized MP and natural organic particle (NOP) ...

N-nitrosamines (NOAs) are potent carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds that can be present in water, biological fluids, food, consumer products and cigarette smoke. Several studies have shown that the formation of NOAs in water can arise from the reactions ...

There is increasing research focused on rubber-derived chemicals (RDCs), predominantly originating from tire and road wear particles. Other consumer products also contain RDCs, but the overall human exposure to these compounds is unknown. This study investigated climbing shoes as a potential contributor to human indoor exposure to RDCs, including potentially harmful substances such as benzothiazoles, p-phenylenediamines (PPDs), and PPD-quinones. The soles of climbing shoes contain high but variable concentr

N-nitrosamines are a group of potent human carcinogens that can be formed during oxidative treatment of drinking water and wastewater. Many tertiary and quaternary amines present in consumer products (e.g., pharmaceuticals, personal care and household prod ...

Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) account for an important part of the anthropogenic particles released into the environment. There are scientific knowledge gaps as to the potential bio accessibility of chemicals associated with TRWP to aquatic organisms. This study aimed to investigate the solubilization of five tire-associated chemicals into fish gut using an in vitro digestion model (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Our results show that the targeted compounds were partly and rapidly solubilized into simulated fl
