We demonstrate data storage on glass/silicon microfluidic devices fabricated using parylene-C as a bonding layer. In particular, we report intermediate parylene-C bonding layer fluorescence (iPBLF) and its use as an on-chip medium for data storage by dynam ...

We present the photosensitive flexopolymer PRISM as a new promising material for the realization of thick optical components. The PRISM flexopolymer can be directly polymerized using conventional UV exposure and is simply developed in a water-based solutio ...

The first divertor was installed in the JET machine between 1992 and 1994 and was operated with carbon tiles and then beryllium tiles in 1994-5. Post-mortem studies after these first experiments demonstrated that most of the impurities deposited in the div ...

Studies of the real-time dynamics of embryonic development require a gentle embryo handling method, the possibility of long-term live imaging during the complete embryogenesis, as well as of parallelization providing a population's statistics, while keepin ...

We present a planar micro-direct methanol fuel cell (μ−DMFC) fabricated by rapid prototyping powder blasting technology. Using an elastomeric mask, we pattern two parallel microfluidic channels in glass. The anode and cathode of the fuel cell are formed by ...

A straightforward and general way for monitoring chemical reactions is via their thermal signature. Such approach requires however an experimental setup with a high thermal stability that simultaneously allows time-resolved heat detection with high sensiti ...

We have realized millimeter-size rf inductors on silicon using a polyimide mold–copper electroplating coil technology. Subsequently, the coils are assembled with magnetic cover plates of commercially available bulk Ni–Zn ferrites of high resistivity. Using the magnetic flux-amplifying ferrite plates, we obtain a 40% enhancement of the inductance and a 25% enhancement of the quality factor (Q510– 20) for frequencies up to 0.2 GHz. Our results indicate the large potential of using bulk ferrites for RF applica

Tungsten (W) melting due to transient power loads, for example those delivered by edge localised modes (ELMs), is a major concern for next step fusion devices. A series of experiments has been performed on JET to investigate the dynamics of Type-I ELM-indu ...

This paper details progress in experimental characterisation work at JET for the long-term irradiation station, conducted as part of a project to perform activation experiments using ITER materials. The aim is to take advantage of the significant 14 MeV ne ...

We characterise computationally and experimentally a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic passive mixer for various Reynolds numbers ranging from 1 to 100, corresponding to primary flow rates of 10-870 mu l min(-1). The 3D mixing channel is composed of mult ...

We propose an original concept for a sandwich immunoassay that is completely performed on-chip using streptavidin-coated beads as substrate. The latter are electrostatically self-assembled on aminosilane micropatterns at the bottom of a microfluidic channe ...

We introduce the concept of the NutriChip, a miniaturized artificial human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) for investigating the potential of immuno-modulatory function of dairy food. More specifically, we are investigating the effect of digested milk on immu ...

Beryllium oxide (BeO) and deuteroxide (BeOxDy) have been found on the melted zone of a beryllium tile extracted from the upper dump plate of JET-ILW (2011-2012 campaign). Results have been obtained using Raman microscopy, which is sensitive to both the che ...

We study the presence within the worm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) of a fluorescent strain of the worm's bacterial food (Escherichia coli (E. coli) OP50) during early adulthood. Use of a microfluidic chip based on a thin glass coverslip substrate al ...

This paper describes the fabrication and characterisation of 2-dimensional inductive devices integrated inside printed circuit boards . PCB and flex-foils. These devices basically are composed of three layers of which the outer layers bear the printed coil patterns and the inner layer is a high permeability ferromagnetic sheet core. Both magnetic metal and copper layers are patterned using standard lithographic techniques. Electroplated interconnections between the outer layers complete the windings. We hav

In this paper, we propose a method to create a natively hydrophilic microfluidic structure in a fast and simple way using an UV-curable polymer (NOA 63 from Norland Optics). This polymer can provide a substitute to PDMS microchannels offering high reproduc ...

Caenorhabditiselegans (C. elegans) has gained importance as a model for studying host-microbiota interactions and bacterial infections related to human pathogens. Assessing the fate of ingested bacteria in the worm's intestine is therefore of great interes ...

This work aims at establishing the parameter space for the existence of geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) on JET as well as investigating their driving and damping mechanisms predicted by different theoretical models. This was achieved using an experimental d ...

Postprandial inflammation is an important factor for human health since chronic low-grade inflammation is associated with chronic diseases. Dairy products have a weak but significant anti-inflammatory effect on postprandial inflammation. The objective of t ...

The MHD response and the penetration of a deuterium shattered pellet into a JET plasma is investigated via the non-linear reduced MHD code JOREK with the neutral gas shielding (NGS) ablation model. The dominant MHD destabilizing mechanism by the injection ...
