transverse direction is investigated with application to the Glass Mat reinforced Thermoplastics (GMT) lamination process in a double belt press.Amodel proposed in Part I to simulate the kinetics of impregnation and the evolution of the fiber volume fraction profile as the resin front progresses across the fiber mat, as well as after macro-impregnation is complete, is further developed to include micro-impregnation effects. The predictions are compared with experimental results obtained using model systems

The influence of the mould material on the build-up of internal stresses during autoclave cure of a unidirectional carbon fibre composite material was investigated using embedded optical fibre Bragg gratings. Four flat moulds (i.e. aluminium, steel, carbon ...

The aim of the present research has been to quantify the influence of different materials on the global dynamic response of a ski. The properties of the individual constituent materials were characterized as a function of temperature and frequency using dy ...

Water impacts form the critical load case for high-performance carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) racing craft. Such events produce a peaked, non-uniform pressure distribution that travels along a hull panel as it is immersed. Current design standards ...

A design tool able to predict the residual stress state and dimensional stability of large complex shaped composite parts has been developed. It is based on a finite element model, using a three-dimensional anisotropic thermo-viscoelastic formulation. Asym ...

The development of reusable fire-safe polymers with a prolonged lifetime heralds the switch for a transition towards circular economy. In this framework, we report a novel phosphonated thermoset which is composed of networked phosphonate esters containing ...

Although addition of montmorillonite (MMT) clay to isotactic polypropylene (iPP) results in large increases in the melt viscosity at low shear rates, satisfactory impregnation of glass mats is obtained with iPP/MMT under conditions typical of industrial pr ...

Shear thickening fluids (STF) demonstrate the ability to simultaneously stiffen and increase their damping capacity above a critical shear strain, which depends on the particle concentration and aspect ratio in the STF. The present work considers two types ...

The evolution of morphology of reactive thermoplastic/unsaturated polyester blends at the surface of glass fibers is investigated during curing. The study focuses on two different types of thermoplastics, incompatible and compatible respectively with the p ...

The dynamic shear-thickening behavior of concentrated colloidal suspensions of fumed silica in polypropylene glycol has been investigated. Dynamic frequency sweeps showed that, for any given solids concentration, the complex viscosity at different imposed ...

We report the development of an intrinsic healing glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite based on a disulphide-containing organic-inorganic thermoset matrix. Thermomechanical experiments showed that the newly developed matrix has a combination of ...

This paper presents a novel Finite Element (FE) simulation approach to examine the mode I fracture of thick adhesive joints used particularly in the trailing edge of the wind turbine blades. The approach involved FE models of the DCB specimens focusing on ...

After the spread of COVID-19, surgical masks became highly recommended to the public. They tend to be handled and used multiple times, which may impact their performance. To evaluate this risk, surgical masks of Type IIR were submitted to four simulated tr ...

A comprehensive understanding of the development of residual strains in composite processing is essential to manufacture high quality composite parts. In this paper, the use of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) optical sensors was investigated to measure in situ t ...

The use of carbon fibre reinforced plastics is steadily increasing in the aerospace industry as rising fuel costs and concerns over the environment push airframe manufacturers to improve aircraft efficiency. The high costs associated with manufacturing car ...

During reheating and post-processing of thermoplastic-based composites, deconsolidation is often observed: the volume fraction fibre decreases and the void content increases. In this article, the phenomena leading to deconsolidation are investigated, with ...

The environmental benefits of recycling are assessed against other end-of-life (EOL) treatments for Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) waste. Recycling via pyrolysis, incineration with energy recovery, and disposal via landfilling are compared. To acco ...

Supramolecular rubbers incorporating a large number of physical cross-links through cooperative hydrogen bonds display high self-healing properties but limited solvent and creep resistance due to the lack of chemical cross-links. Increasing both chemical c ...

A difunctional cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer was cationically photo-polymerized in the presence of a diaryliodonium salt photoinitiator and an isopropyl thioxanthone photosensitizer at different temperatures and UV intensities. The photo-polymerization kine ...

Humanitarian actors involved in physical rehabilitation, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), usually provide their beneficiaries with lower-limb prostheses comprising Solid Ankle Cushion Heel (SACH) feet as these are considered app ...
