Bedload transport rate fluctuations have been observed over time in steep rivers and flumes with wide grain size distributions even under constant sediment feeding and water discharge. The observed bedload transport rate pulses are periodic and a consequen ...

Energy recovery through local hydropower generation is a way of coping with high electricity expenditures in wastewater systems (WWS). Installing small hydropower plants within WWS is already in some countries eligible for incentive policy mechanisms to re ...

Soil erosion is both a major driver and consequence of land degradation with significant on-site and off-site costs which are critical to understand and quantify. One major cost of soil erosion originates from the sediments delivered to aquatic systems (e. ...

Large wood (LW) elements are often transported by rivers into reservoirs during heavy rainfall events. Large wood has important environmental attributes that benefit the diversification of riverine ecosystems. There are several studies dealing with the tra ...

The erosion caused by jets issued from hydraulic structures progressively develops a confined scour-hole on the riverbed. A realistic scour assessment must consider both the influence of the air entrained when the jet plunges into the pool and the flow pat ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a major concern in the operational management of dams and appurtenant structures. The increasing volume of sediments deposited in reservoirs leads to a loss of water storage, undermining the purpose itself of the dam for human us ...

Velocimetry is used in various fields of research. In hydraulics, Ultrasonic Velocimetry based on the Doppler Shift effect can accurately resolve the quasi-instantaneous flow field [Takeda Y. Velocity profile measurement by Ultrasonic Doppler method. Exper ...

The aim of the present paper is to contribute to the identification of the principal mechanical- hydraulical relationships du ring hydraulic transients by means of the analysis of observed transient pressure and strain waves in different pipe rigs. Four different experimental set-ups are analysed: a straight copper pipe with either moving or anchored downstream pipe-end, a coil copper pipe and a coil polyethylene pipe. Discussion highlights differences in the response of each system in terms of wave shape,

In the framework of a research project studying the influences of pumping/turbine modes on turbulence, flow fields and suspended sediments in reservoirs, prototype measurements are carried out at the Grimsel II pumped storage plant (Switzerland). In situ recordings comprise flow and velocity patterns in the lower reservoir. For the measurement of flow velocities, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) devices have been fixed on the reservoir bottom in front of the intake/outlet structure. The temporal evo

Dams interrupt the longitudinal connectivity of a river as they store water and trap sediment. When transport capacity downstream of dams exceeds sediment supply, water becomes hungry and channel incision, bed armouring and reduction of morphological diver ...

The performance of circular and linear jet arrangements on the release of suspended sediment out of a prismatic tank has been investigated. Experiments conducted are (1) without any forced jet stirring (reference case), (2) four jets arranged in a horizont ...

Small-scale hydropower is emerging as a decentralized source to satisfy local demand for electricity. In water supply systems, microhydropower can be used for energy recovery associated with excessive pressure control. However, there is a lack of specific solutions for applications within networks where discharges are highly variable and there are limitations of pressure. An arrangement of microturbines specially conceived for water supply networks is proposed, based on a recently tested microturbine for in

Accumulations of floating debris in reservoirs can have negative impacts on the safe operation of a dam. Thus, adequate spillway design in view of driftwood is of paramount importance. Herein, investigation of driftwood blockage with a reservoir flow appro ...

Hydropeaking is a common phenomenon of water courses that are affected by peak energy production of hydro power plants. It may cause severe impacts on the biodiversity of a stream. In fact, due to hydropeaking fishes, macroinvertebrates and aquatic plants undergo a major stress and frequently they are not able to survive these frequent water level fluctuations. In this paper a case study is presented where several mitigation measures for an affected river are evaluated. Abiotic indicators representing the h

Riparian zones are some of the most valuable and at the same time endangered ecosystems in the world. Their progressive degradation caused by anthropogenic pressure calls for the adoption of effective, resilient restoration strategies. However, a full unde ...

The flow field of multiple-cylinder configurations exhibits complex interactions between shear layers, vortexes and wakes. For high stem-Reynolds numbers, the flow is turbulent and, low and intermediate areal number-densities of cylinders, and turbulence i ...

The European Union has the ambition to be the first carbonneutral continent by 2050. To fulfil this objective and integrate into the grid the large amount of power from solar and wind, Europe can rely upon the high storage and flexible capacity of hydropow ...

Emergent vegetation covering floodplains and wetlands has an important role in fluvial ecosystems. Since natural systems are not homogeneous, the flow within the stem array is influenced by several space scales, determined by the number-density of stems and its spatial modulation. The aim of this study is to characterize experimentally the spatial variation of the flow at the smallest spatial scales over a wavelength of the largest scale. To meet the proposed objectives, an experimental test was carried out

In braiding river systems, gravel bars fulfill important ecological functions. At the River Sense, one of the last unregulated rivers in Switzerland, the frequency of gravel bar inundation of a 2 km long site maintaining indicator species such as Myricaria Germanica (German Tamarisk) and Chorthippus pullus (Gravel Grashopper) was studied. Based upon both detailed data collected in the field and a hydrological analysis of the site, a numerical two-dimensional model of the site was developed to investigate th

Throttle surge tanks are a part of high head powerplants. The main consequence of a throttle placement is to introduce head losses by accelerating the flow. They make it possible to manage extreme water levels during mass oscillations while increasing water surge, e.g. water hammer, in the headrace tunnel. This phenomenon happens every time the flow discharge is changed in the waterway. Either throttle is placed during construction to reduce costs or its placement is needed following a refurbishment to adap
