The aim of this work is to obtain a better understanding of the morphological development in alpine river confluences, where special attention is given to the widening of the tributary channel and its influence on bed morphology evolution. Hydraulic tests ...

Reservoir sedimentation is an issue that dam operators are increasingly facing as dams are aging. Not only does it reduce a reservoir's capacity but it also affects its outlet structures such as bottom outlets and powerhouse intakes. Sedimentation may also ...

The challenge of understanding and managing of turbidity currents in reservoirs ...

Within the framework of the EU Horizon 2020 project, the Hydropower Europe Forum has prepared a Research and Innovation Agenda and a Strategic Industry Roadmap for the hydropower sector. These two outcomes are presented in this paper, including the main re ...

In spite of its hydraulic and morphologic importance, the conditions of occurrence of flow separation at the inner bank of open channel bends are still not known. In a series of 23 experiments in a laboratory open channel bend with flat sand bed, it was in ...

The International Commission on Large Dams' 79th Annual Meeting, to be held May 29-June 3 in Lucerne, Switzerland, brings together dam experts from throughout the world to exchange knowledge and experiences. Such information exchange is vital to ensure efficient use and development of dams and hydroelectric generating facilities.

Hydraulic scale effects on physical Piano Key weir (PKW) models were so far rarely discussed in literature, even though almost all prototypes are model-tested before construction. In parallel, physical weir models are generally known to include significant ...

Electricity generation, water supply, flood protection, flow regulation and navigation are amongst the main services provided by reservoirs. Sedimentation affects the sustainability of reservoirs, by reducing their storage capacity, and increases the negat ...

In the present study the velocity profiles and the instability at the interface of a two phase water-oil fluid were investigated. The main aim of the research project was to investigate the instability mechanisms that can cause the failure of an oil spill ...

Generally applicable approaches for estimating the‘‘quasi-static’’, which means without fluid–structure interaction and frequency-dependent water-hammer wave speed in steel-lined pressure tunnels are analyzed. The external constraints and assumptions of th ...

Large wood increases the morphological and hydraulic complexity of rivers, yet it may block and modify the flood discharge capacity of hydraulic structures. To assess the related risk, blockage probability estimation for hydraulic structures such as reserv ...

Recent studies showed that a specific design can reduce the impact of water waves on structures, thus limiting the damages. Herein the impact of waves on buildings is addressed, pointing out the influence of orientation on the hydrodynamic process. ...

The interest in Piano Key weirs (PKW) was increasing over the past years, both in terms of application and hydraulic research. Several systematic model test series were per-formed and published so far, originating from different hydraulic laboratories arou ...
