We present the results of laboratory investigations of continuously-fed density currents that propagate first over a smooth horizontal bed and then over a porous substrate of limited length. Inflow discharge, initial excess density, and substrate porositie ...

Hydropower systems often operate in contextual conditions quite different from those for which they have been planned for. Often, the pace at which the changes occur does not invite operators to analyse their long-term effects and quantify the resilience of these system. During the last decades hydropower has experienced strong changes. Energy markets have evolved, dam safety guidelines and legislations have undergone improvements, societal awareness towards their potentially adverse effects on natural ecos

The pattern-oriented memory (POM) is a novel historical rainfall interpolation method that explicitly takes into account the time dimension in order to interpolate areal rainfall maps. The method is based on the idea that rainfall patterns exist and can be ...

River reaches downstream of dams with constant residual discharge often lack sediment supply and periodic high flows due to dam sediment retention and flow regulation, respectively. To test a novel multi-deposit methodology for defining environmental flows ...

River restoration has become a priority goal in many countries. The interest in rivers as valuable habitats for floral and faunal diversity and as an ecosystem with important functions has increased. For evaluating the structural changes from a river resto ...

The worst enemy of sustainable use of reservoirs is sedimentation. Often the main silting process is the result of settling down of suspended sediments. In shallow reservoirs the flow pattern and the sediment deposition processes are strongly influenced by the reservoir geometry. The trap efficiency of a shallow reservoir depends on the characteristics of the inflowing sediments and the retention time of the water in the reservoir, which in turn are controlled by the reservoir geometry. With the purpose of

In laboratory experiments, the influence of inflow and outflow sequences on the behavior of fine sediment was investigated. The experimental set-up consisted of two interconnected rectangular basins, between which water was moved back and forth. Suspended ...

River training works performed in the last couple of centuries constrained the natural dynamics of channel networks in locations that include the confluences between tributaries and main channels. As a result, the dynamics of these confluences are currentl ...

Overbank sedimentation is predominantly due to fine sediments transported under suspension that become trapped and settle in floodplains when high-flow conditions occur in rivers. In a compound channel, the processes of exchanging water and fine sediments ...

Improper use of chemical fertilizers has led to land degradation. Organic crops, which are farmed using organic fertilizers to reduce the negative environmental effects, are considered an alternative solution to develop the ecosystem health and improve the ...

Within the fluvial network, river confluences are particular areas characterized by complex hydrodynamic, morphodynamic and sedimentary processes. These processes have been observed to be governed by parameters such as the discharge ratio, the junction ang ...

Local widening in a channelized river is a common practice in restoration projects. The lateral embayments built for this purpose in the river banks are partially filled up by fine sediments. This allows the formation of aquatic habitats with hydraulic and ...

Piano key weirs (PKWs) are a weir type characterized by an effective rating curve. Accordingly, this control structure is primarily applied at dams to increase the spillway capacity. In recent years, PKWs also have been implemented in rivers combined with ...

The blockage of weirs or bridges by in-stream wood can reduce the flood discharge capacity, leading to hazardous situations. To assess the related risk, blocking probabilities quantifications are needed. However, large wood has a random behaviour and it is ...

Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is an extension of a quantitative imaging technique to measure water surface velocities using simple and inexpensive equipment. This paper describes the implementation of imaged-based LSPIV in eight different ...

Local scouring is a leading cause of bridge collapses. To protect bridges against local scouring, different countermeasures have been proposed and tested in the literature. In this study, the performance of collars was evaluated for scour reduction at two ...

Confluences between small steep tributaries with dominant supply of poorly sorted sediment and larger main channels with dominant flow supply, which are characterized by a pronounced bed discordance, have not yet been considered in the literature. The hydro-morpho-sedimentary processes in such confluences are not well described by existing conceptual models of confluence dynamics. Examples of such confluences on the Upper Rhone River, Switzerland, served as prototype for the reported laboratory experiments.

About 50% of all hydropower plants (HPPs) worldwide were originally commissioned more than 40 years ago, so that the advanced age of the fleet is a major concern across all continents, and especially in Europe. The modernization of HPPs can generate severa ...

Few studies have addressed simultaneously the feedback between the hydrodynamics of a gravity cur- rent and the geomorphological changes of a mobile bed. Hydrodynamic quantities such as turbulent and mean velocities, bed shear stress and turbulent stresses ...

In mountainous areas, high-head-storage hydropower plants produce peak load energy. The resulting unsteady water release to rivers, called hydropeaking, alters the natural flow regime. Mitigating the adverse impacts of hydropeaking on aquatic ecosystems ha ...
