Isothermal NaCl sintering experiments are conducted between 500 and 790 degrees C on powders 75, 100, 150 and 400 mu m in average diameter. Along with literature data, the results are compared with theoretical predictions for the initial stage of sintering ...

The cyclic behaviour of 400 mu m pore size replicated aluminium foam is assessed in tension-tension fatigue with a stress ratio equal to 0.1, keeping the load amplitude constant, for relative density values comprised between 0.175 and 0.220. The number of ...

The replication process is presented and discussed with emphasis on methods for microstructural tailoring of open-pore microcellular aluminium-based foams, highlighting methods it offers for control of principal foam mesostructural and microstructural parameters: pore volume fraction, pore shape, pore size(s), as well as the composition and microstructure of the metal making the foam.

Tensile tests have been performed on replicated aluminum alloy foams of relative density between 4.5% and 8%. During the test the electrical resistance was measured with a four-point set-up and the displacements along the gage section were measured using a ...

Internal damage in uniaxial continuous alumina fibre-reinforced aluminium is measured by acoustic emission during tensile straining in the fibre direction. Over most of the loading history spatially uncorrelated fibre fragmentation occurs, consistent with ...

An overview is presented of current research at EPFL on structural metallic materials produced by infiltration processing. The paper comprises a brief introduction to the infiltration process, then presents results on particle reinforced metals and open-celled aluminium foams.

A new technique is proposed for the direct measurement of capillary forces in systems of relevance to the infiltration processing of metal matrix composites. Capable of handling melt temperatures up to 1500 K and infiltration pressures up to 20 MPa, the te ...

Despite remarkable progress made in recent years, producing freeform three-dimensional micro-components out of copper, silver or gold and their alloys remains an engineering challenge: current processes are either too slow to be economically viable, or pro ...

Particulate reinforced material ...

The high-temperature wettability of AlN particle preforms with pure molten Cu, Al and Ph is quantified by means of drainage curves measured during pressure infiltration. By integrating the drainage curves obtained in this study, the work of immersion for e ...

We explore the influence of the metal microstructure on the compressive flow stress of replicated microcellular 400-mu m pore size Al-4.5 wt%Cu solidified at two different solidification cooling rates, in the as-cast and T6 conditions. It is found that the ...

Toughness measurements of a Ti-45Al-2N4u-2Nb + 0.8%vol TiB2 alloy with a. near fully lamellar microstructure and a Ti-46Al-8Nb alloy with a convoluted microstructure are performed at 650 degrees C under vacuum according to ASTM Standard E1820. Respective v ...

Microcellular open-cell metal foams with pores of 75 or 400 pm in diameter and made of pure Al or Al-2 wt% Mg are tested in compression. The aluminum foam exhibits a typical smooth plastic flow and a positive strain rate sensitivity, whereas plastic instab ...
