Recent progress made in our lab. in the field of electrochem. promotion of heterogeneous catalytic gas reactions is reviewed. The phenomenon consists of electrochem. polarization of the catalyst/solid electrolyte interface resulting in a dramatic, non-Faradaic modification of the catalytic reaction rate. Two main aspects have been addressed, the mechanistic interpretation of the phenomenon and the development of bipolar cell configurations suitable for practical applications. Fundamental studies were made u

The electrochem. promoted induction of self-sustained catalytic rate and potential oscillations during C2H4 oxidn. was studied over sputtered Rh thin (40 nm catalyst films interfaced with ZrO2 (8 mol% Y2O3)). The reaction rate oscillates simultaneously wit ...

The relation between the catalyst potential and the catalytic performance has been investigated in the gas-phase combustion of propylene with oxygen over rhodium catalysts at 375 DegC. The rhodium catalyst, deposited on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) solid electrolyte, also served as working electrode in the electrochem. cell. Under open-circuit conditions, the measured catalyst potential was found to be a sensitive indicator of the oxidn. state of the rhodium catalyst, which influences the catalytic reac

The method and app. for carrying out electrochem. promoted catalytic reactions, i.e., catalytic reactions where the catalytic rate and selectivity is modified by applying an elec. current or potential between the porous catalyst film which is deposited on ...

The electrochemical behavior of Pt/YSZ electrodes in oxygen containing atmosphere at 450 A degrees C has been investigated by double-step chronoamperometry and programmed linear sweep cyclic voltammetry. The response of the O-2(g),Pt/YSZ system in these ex ...

Electrochem. promotion (EP) of gas-phase catalysis with O2--conducting solid electrolytes is addressed. The behavior of the ref. electrode, prepd. by deposition of a gold film, was found to be quasi-reversible, 12O2/O2- being the potential detg. redox couple. A fairly sym. potential distribution in the electrochem. cell was calcd. The IR drop correction was shown to be negligible at low currents typical to EP expts. The electrochem. activation of catalysis is due to the act of promoters at the catalyst | ga

Electrochem. oxidn. of orgs. at thermally prepd. dimensionally stable metal oxide anodes (DSA) has been studied. In reactions involving only simple electron transfer, oxide electrodes exhibit an electrocatalytic activity similar to that of noble metal electrodes. In oxidn. reactions of more complex mechanism, oxide anodes show no electrocatalytic activity below the potential of oxygen evolution and oxidn. of orgs. can take place only under conditions of simultaneous oxygen evolution. A simplified mechanism

The concept of nonfaradaic electrochem. modification of catalytic activity (NEMCA) was applied for the in situ control of catalytic activity of a rhodium film deposited on YSZ (yttria stabilized zirconia) solid electrolyte towards redn. of 1000 ppm NO by 1000 ppm C3H6 in presence of excess (5000 ppm) O2 at 300 Deg. A temporary heating at this feed compn. results in a long-lasting deactivation of the catalyst under open circuit conditions due to partial oxidn. of the rhodium surface. Pos. current application

Bimetallic Pt/Sn nanoparticles, synthesized by the microemulsion method, have been investigated once deposited on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) substrate electrode. Nanoparticles are in the nano-size domain and their effective composition corresponds to thei ...

A review with refs. concerning electrochem. promotion of catalysis is presented. Recent progress made in our lab. in the field of electrochem. promotion of heterogeneous catalytic gas reactions is presented. The phenomenon consists of non-Faradaic modification of the catalytic reaction rate as the result of electrochem. polarization of the interface between the catalyst and the solid electrolyte support. Two main aspects are addressed, the description of the phenomenon and the development of bipolar cell co

A novel dismantlable monolithic-type electrochem. promoted catalytic reactor and "smart" sensor-catalytic reactor unit has been constructed and tested for hydrocarbon oxidn. and NO redn. by C2H4 in presence of O2. In this novel reactor, thin (.apprx.20-40 nm) porous catalyst films made of two different materials are sputter-deposited on opposing surfaces of thin (0.25 mm) parallel solid electrolyte plates supported in the grooves of a ceramic monolithic holder and serve as sensor or electropromoted cataly

The electrochemical promotion of CO combustion over nano-dispersed Platinum particles supported on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is investigated at 300 degrees C under high vacuum conditions. By polarizing the nanoparticles, we were able to enhance the ...

In the search for a good dimensionally stable anode-type electrode, p-silicon (1-3 mW cm) has been chosen as the substrate material due to its high anodic stability and its reasonable cost compared to titanium and tantalum. Several p-Si/IrO2 electrodes have been prepd. by thermal decompn. at different temp. The effect of prepn. temp. on the morphol. and electrochem. properties has been investigated by SEM anal., X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry in 1 M HClO4 showing that p-Si/IrO2 prepd. at 450 DegC

The electrochem. oxidn. (or combustion) of orgs. with simultaneous oxygen evolution has been investigated using different oxide electrodes. A simplified mechanism for the electrochem. oxidn. of orgs. is presented, according to which selective oxidn. occurs with oxide anodes (MOx) for which the formation of higher oxides (e.g.: MOx+1) is possible. Combustion occurs at electrodes with oxidatively satd. surface. Detection of OH radicals formed by water discharge at different anodes using N,N dimethyl-p-nitroso

Ternary Pt-based nanoparticles (nominal composition Pt80Ru10Sn10 ) were synthesized via the microemulsion route and deposited onto boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The particle size measured by transmission electron microscopy was in the 2–5nm diam ran ...

The effect of electrochem. promotion of catalysis or nonfaradaic electrochem. modification of catalytic activity or electropromotion was studied for the model reaction of ethylene oxidn. on sputter-coated Rh films. The thin (40 nm) Rh films were deposited ...

The inertness and unique electrochem. properties of diamond present great potential for a variety of applications in aggressive environments. Preliminary results showed the widest known electrochem. window before water decompn., allowing new possibilities for both anodic and cathodic reactions. Studies of the oxidn. of org. compds. was performed with alcs. such as isopropanol, phenol and org. acids. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates no activity in the potential range where water is stable. In the potential re

The Pt/YSZ interface was investigated at low oxygen partial pressure under high vacuum (HV) conditions at 400 A degrees C. Two different electrochemical techniques were coupled to mass spectrometric gas analysis using a new solid electrochemical mass spect ...
