The global transition to decentralized energy systems signifies a fundamental transformation toward sustainable energy paradigms. This study specifically focuses on the Swiss energy system, analyzing how dynamic pricing influences the strategic decisions o ...

The Net Zero Lab is composed of different experts in areas of energy integration, modelling and simulation, life cycle analysis, furnaces operation and revamping, energy audit, and financial analysis. This team counts with the participation of practitioners and researchers from EPFL, HES SO, OIKEN and NOVELIS Sierre. This detailed study aims to assess the sustainable utilization of renewable energy resources, especially biomass, in order to decarbonize heavy industries, such as secondary aluminium producti

The NetZeroLab Valais was established as part of the commitment of Novelis Sierre to reduce scope 1&2 CO2 emissions by leveraging carbon neutral solutions for aluminium manufacturing. Together with the Swiss innovation and research hub in Energypolis ( HES SO) and the local energy distributor Oiken the NetZeroLab brings together experts in areas of energy integration, modeling and simulation, life cycle analysis, furnaces operation and revamping, energy audit, and financial analysis. A systemic study has

Secondary aluminium production facilities typically consume 700-1,000 kWh of natural gas and 200-400 kWh of electricity per tonne of rolled sheets. To achieve environmental targets, the aluminium industry is exploring decarbonization strategies, including biomass gasification, carbon abatement and utilization, powerto-gas, direct electrification, and waste heat recovery, among others. While most of these technologies have lifetimes of a couple of decades, decisions on their installation must be made today.

As governments and international organizations accelerate efforts to achieve net-zero emissions, industries are increasingly pressured to adopt more sustainable practices. This is especially imperative in luxury industry, which depends on other industries such as steel, glass and precious metal sectors that rely on fossil energy and material resources. Although more than 90%, of the emissions of watchmaking (Swatch) comes from the supply chain of raw materials (scope 3 emission, also known as background pro

Aluminium is one of the most widely used metals in the world, but its production is highly energy intensive and largely dependent on the use of fossil fuels. A typical secondary aluminium production facility consumes 700-1,000 kWh of natural gas and 200-40 ...

Secondary aluminium production relies on natural gas to transform both primary and recycled aluminium into semi-fabricated products, leading to significant atmospheric emissions, energy losses, and resource consumption. Despite the potential for waste heat ...

The disposal of sewage sludge poses significant challenges due to storage difficulties and the presence of pollutants and pathogens. Conventional treatment methods, such as incineration and anaerobic digestion (AD), are compared to advanced technologies li ...

The transition towards renewable energy is leading to an important strain on the energy grids. The question of designing and deploying renewable energy technologies in symbiosis with existing grids and infrastructure is arising. While current energy system ...
