In this article, a setup including a passive gas breakdown mitigation technique for satellite slip ring assemblies (SRAs) is introduced and tested. The setup features a central conducting ring, separated from two external conducting limiting discs (LDs) by ...

The limited knowledge of plasma-activated media (PAM) antimicrobial effects hampers applications of cold atmospheric plasmas for wastewater treatment. To address these limitations, the present work focuses on the study of the plasma-culture media interaction and induced bacteria inactivation. A Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge (SDBD) is directly applied on M. luteus and E. coli resuspended in deionized water and Luria-Bertani (LB) broth. Bacteria inactivation is enhanced during 24-h post-plasma treatmen

This contribution describes the results of impurity seeding experiments using neon gas injection into the private fl zone of an ohmically heated TCV single null lower, deuterium fuelled, open divertor configuration. In these first experiments, neon has been injected under feedback control on the intensity of the UV NeVIII line at 77 nm. Measurements of the dependence of edge temperature and density on ii, at the outboard divertor target show the divertor in the absence of neon to be operating in the low rec

The basic plasma physics device TORPEX features some of the main ingredients of the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) of fusion devices, including gradients of density and magnetic field, as well as magnetic field curvature. A simple magnetized torus configuration (SMT) is produced using a small vertical magnetic field component superimposed to the main toroidal field, resulting in helical open magnetic field lines. A comprehensive study of electrostatic instabilities and turbulence in TORPEX plasmas has been performe

The TORoidal Plasma EXperiment (TORPEX) is a basic plasma physics device where a Simple Magnetized Torus configuration (SMT) can be obtained superimposing a small vertical magnetic field component on the main toroidal field, resulting in open magnetic helical field lines. This configuration reproduces some of the main features of a tokamak plasma edge, including density and magnetic field gradient and curvature. In the last years, a complete study of electrostatic fluctuations and turbulence has been comple

A novel method for inverting time-resolved line-integrated interferometric plasma density measurements is described. The method uses singular value decomposition of local density profiles from Thomson scattering measurements obtained at low sampling rates ...

A theoretical investigation of electron-D-2 resonant collisions-via the low-lying and the Rydberg states of D-2(-)-is presented for vibrational excitation, dissociative electron attachment and dissociative excitation processes by using the local-complex-po ...

This topical review gathers the last updates concerning caesium-free negative ion sources presented during the 63rd Course of the International school of Quantum Electronics of the Ettore Majorana Foundation and European collaborative works related to thes ...

Intermittent blobs, which propagate across a confining magnetic fields, are universally observed in natural and laboratory plasmas. In fusion plasmas, cross-field transport of particles and energy are associated, at least in part, with the propagation of blobs, which are therefore of great importance for the design of future fusion reactors. In TORPEX, blobs are generated from ideal interchange modes and, driven by B and curvature-induced charge separation, propagate radially outwards. An analytical blob s

The TORoidal Plasma EXperiment (TORPEX) is a Simple Magnetized Torus (SMT) where open helical magnetic field lines are obtained from the superposition of a small vertical component on the main toroidal field. The SMT configuration features the main driving mechanisms of plasma instabilities characterising the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) of larger tokamak devices, making TORPEX a very attractive machine to perform fusion oriented studies of plasma turbulence. A new experimental set-up has been recently developed

Intermittent convective transport caused by blobs is universally observed at the edge of laboratory plasmas and it is of great importance for future fusion reactors. We present recent advances in the basic study of blob formation and propagation dynamics and related universal properties in TORPEX simple magnetized plasmas. Blobs are generated from quasi-coherent interchange modes and, driven by ∇B and curvature-induced charge separation, propagate radially outwards. Depending on the regime, their velocity i

Experiments with high-power electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and current drive (ECCD) in the TCV tokamak are discussed. Power up to 2.7 MW from six gyrotrons is delivered to the tokamak at the second-harmonic frequency (82.7 GHz) in X-mode. The power is transmitted to the plasma by six independent launchers, each equipped with steerable mirrors that allow a wide variety of injection angles in both the poloidal and toroidal directions. Fully non-inductive operation of the tokamak has been achieved in steady

Atmospheric pressure low power plasma jets operating in noble gases are a widespread tool in plasma medicine studies. We present experimental results obtained in one such device, which combine physical, chemical and biological measurements to assess the ef ...

In DEMO reactor to produce electricity, a total installed power up to 150 MW is considered. In the heating mix, neutral beam (NB) injectors of high neutral particle energy (0.8-1 MeV) with high wall-plug efficiency (η in the range of 50% to 60%) will be required. Present design considered a NB system delivering in total 50 MW. In the Siphore NB concept [1], one of the promising candidates to meet these challenging requirements, negative ions will be extracted from a long, thin ion source 3 m high and 15 cm

Time-averaged spatially resolved measurements are used in many fields of physics to determine spatial distributions of a physical quantity. Although one could think that time averaging suppresses all information on time variation, there are some situations ...

In inboard-limited plasmas, the Scrape-Off Layer (SOL) shows two regions: the near SOL, extending a few mm from the Last Closed Flux Surface (LCFS), characterized by a steep gradient of the parallel heat flux radial profile, and a far SOL, typically some cm w ...

Helicon plasma sources operating with hydrogen or deuterium might be attractive for fusion applications due to their higher power efficiency compared to inductive radiofrequency plasma sources. In recent years, the resonant antenna ion device (RAID) has be ...

Helicon discharges are often considered somewhat mysterious, exhibiting experimental behaviors that are challenging to explain, such as abrupt plasma density jumps, hysteresis, and ‘blue core’ formation, among others. A significant part of the difficulty i ...

The surface erosion of biased electrodes immersed in a radio frequency (RF) plasma was investigated in oblique magnetic fields ranging from 0.1 T to 3.5 T. The plasma potential and density in the vicinity of the biased electrode have been measured using an ...
