Synopsis: This project is about using musical recordings of string instruments to determine on which strings notes have been played. It includes the study of the spectral content of the recordings and the development of a robust classification algorithm. LCAV20170911 Level: BS, MS Description: In a string instrument such as a guitar or a violin, most notes and some chords can be played using different fingerings. The art of establishing fi

The concept of stationarity is central to signal processing; it indeed guarantees that the deterministic spectral properties of linear time-invariant systems are also applicable to realizations of stationary random processes. In almost all practical settings, however, the signal at hand is just a finite-size vector whose underlying generating process, if we are willing to admit one, is unknown; In this case, invoking stationarity is tantamount to stating that a single linear system (however complex) suffice

With society’s increasing reliance on digital data sharing, the protection of sensitive information has become critical. Encryption serves as one of the privacy-preserving methods; however, its realization in the audio domain predominantly relies on signal processing or software methods embedded into hardware. In this paper, we introduce LenslessMic, a hybrid optical hardware-based encryption method that utilizes a lensless camera as a physical layer of security applicable to multiple types of audio. We sho

Stained glass windows are designed to reveal their powerful artistry under diverse and time-varying lighting conditions; virtual relighting of stained glass, therefore represents an exceptional tool for the appreciation of this age old art form. However, a ...

In this paper we describe our approach to teaching applied digital signal processing (DSP) using freely-available software and inexpensive off-the-shelf hardware components. The pedagogical framework is built around simple real-time audio processing algori ...

Classical digital signal processing (DSP) lore tells us the tale of a continuous-time primeval signal, of its brutal sampling, and of the magic sinc interpolation that, under the aegis of bandlimitedness, brings the original signal back to (continuous) lif ...

Reducing energy cost is crucial for energy-constrained smart wireless cameras. Existing platforms impose two main challenges: First, most commercial smart phones have a closed platform, which makes it impossible to manage low-level circuits. Since the samp ...

We present a method to maintain the subjective perception of volume of audio signals and, at the same time, reduce their absolute peak value. We focus on achieving this without compromising the perceived audio quality. This is specially useful, for example ...

An alternative structure for adaptive linear prediction is proposed in which the adaptive filter is replaced by a cascade of inde- pendently adapting, low-order stages, and the prediction is generated by means of successive refinements. When the adaptation algorithm for the stages is LMS, the associated short filters are less affected by eigenvalue spread and mode coupling problems and display a faster convergence to their steady-state value. Experimental results show that a cascade of second-order LMS filt

In communication systems, it is crucial to estimate the perceived quality of audio and speech. The industrial standards for many years have been PESQ, 3QUEST, and POLQA, which are intrusive methods. This restricts the possibilities of using these metrics i ...

A common technique to extend linear prediction to nonstationary signals is time segmentation: the signal is split into small portions and the modelization is carried out locally. The accuracy of the analysis is, however, dependent on the window size and on the signal characteristics, so that the problem of finding a good segmentation is crucial to the entire modeling scheme. In this paper, we present an algorithm which determines the optimal segmentation with respect to a cost function relating prediction e

The light transport matrix has become a powerful tool for scene relighting, owing to the versatility of its representational power of various light transport phenomenon. We argue that scenes with an almost planar surface geometry, even with significant amo ...

Wavelet or sub–band coding has been quite successful in compression applications, and this success can be attributed in part to the good approximation properties of wavelets. In this paper, we revisit rate–distortion (RD) bounds for the wavelet approximation of piecewise smooth functions, and piecewise polynomial functions in particular. We contrast these results with RD bounds achievable using an oracle–based method. We then introduce a practical dynamic programming algorithm, which achieves performance si

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become an emergent paradigm of large-scale knowledge distribution, have generated wide interest in the higher education community and are anticipated by many to bring impact to the future of higher education. In this research project, we study the learning analytics and learner dynamics of a pilot MOOC, the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) MOOC on Coursera. In the first part, we study the learning analytics using scheduling theories and ranking algorithms; in the seco

With a novel, less classical approach to the subject, the authors have written a book with the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The threatment is therefore less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual aspects, the idea being to allow the readers to think about the subject at a higher conceptual level, thus building the foundations for more advanced topics. The book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vei

Consumer-grade plenoptic camera Lytro draws a lot of interest from both academic and industrial world. However its low resolution in both spatial and angular domain prevents it from being used for fine and detailed light field acquisition. This paper propose ...

The purpose of this project was to bring to a wider public an almost forgotten technique for color photography, invented by Gabriel Lippmann in 1892 and rewarded with a Nobel prize in 1908. The project was born out of a longstanding cooperation between EPFL and the Elysée photography museum in Lausanne, which holds the largest collection of original Lippmann plates, and it was crowned by an extremely successful Lippmann photography exhibition at Plateforme10 in March 2023. This work was made possible by an

In this project, we study the problem of reconstructing parametrized fonts from scanned images. In the first part, we investigate high-resolution noise-free images. In the second part, we study the noisy images, where artefacts such as low-resolution and blurry edges come into play. We present the quad-tree spline fitting method to robustly reconstruct parametrized fonts in the presence of print-scan artefacts.

The invention refers to a method for analysing reflected light of an object. First a light angle distribution for a point of the object is determined. Then a plenoptic projector is controlled to illuminate the point of the object with the determined light ...
