Small-scale biogas-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, integrated with carbon capture storage (CCS) technologies, offer a sustainable solution for European farms’ heat and power demands with minimal carbon emissions. This study investigates different ...

This paper presents the modeling strategy developed for the design of a planar solid oxide fuel cell repeat element. Design goal are to reach good performance (power density) and reliability (ie. limit risk of failure and degradation). This challenging problem, involving multiple physical phenomena, different scales (from the pores of the catalyst to the interaction of the fuel cell with the system), is addressed with a multi-scale modeling approach. Handling the complexity of the problem (including kinetic

This study reports on the combination of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) generators fueled with biogas as renewable energy source, recoverable from wastes but at present underexploited. From a mobilisable near-future potential in the European Union (EU-15) of 17 Mtoe, under 15% appears to be converted today into useful heat and power (2 Mtoe). SOFCs could improve and promote the exploitation of biogas on manifold generation sites as small combined heat and power (5-50 kWel), especially for farm and sewage inst

This paper presents a model-based investigation to handle the fundamental issues for the design of co-electrolysis based power-to-methane at the levels of both the stack and system: the role of CO2 in co-electrolysis, the benefits of employing pressurized ...

Strontium lanthanum manganite (LSM) and lanthanum ferrite (LSF) perovskite cathode and oxygen membrane materials were synthesized using different techniques: spray pyrolysis, a modified citrate route, oxalate and carbonate co-precipitations. The use of Ca, ...

Green hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is a promising approach for future sustainable energy and industry. Among the existing water electrolysis technologies, solid oxide steam electrolysis exhibits the highest electrical efficiency, ...

The increased emphasis on renewable energy has resulted in a surge of R&D efforts into hydrogen and battery research. The intensive electrochemical environment surrounding the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has plagued both the activity and stabili ...

The increasing penetration of intermittent renewable power challenges the stability of the electrical grid, thus coal power plants are usually required to extend the operation range by reducing the minimum load. This work proposes a concept of coupling sol ...

A model for a 1000 kW class solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system running on biogas from a sewage sludge digestion plant was implemented in a process flow scheme using external steam reforming. The model stack consisted of planar anode supported cells operated at 800 degreesC displaying state-of- the-art electrochemical performance (0.15 W/cm(2) at 80% fuel utilisation). Real annual data from an existing sewage plant were used as input to the model. From the input of 43 m(3)/h biogas (63% CH4), equivalent to

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) are likely candidates for electricity production with high efficiency and promise reasonable fuel tolerance. While fuel impurities are known anode poisons, less attention is brought to air-purity, especially to air-side conta ...

The common technology for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is based on a cermet (ceramic-metal composite) anode of nickel with yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), often used as the supporting structure. One of the main limitations of this technology is the tole ...

Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as promising alternatives to internal combustion engines (ICEs) to reduce pollution. Recent research on PEMFCs focuses on achieving higher power densities, reducing the refueling time, mitigating th ...

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies are re-gaining momentum in a number of sectors including industrial, tertiary and residential ones. Integrated biogas fuel cell plants in wastewater treatment plants and other bioenergy recovery plants are nowadays on th ...

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell systems (SOFC) are developed for their electrical efficiency and versatility. Versatility stems from their tolerance towards CO and CH4, which allows for the use of various reformed fuels. Efficiency results from the direct conversion of the chemical energy of fuels into electricity and the availability of high temperature heat for internal steam reforming. In this study, short SOFC stacks provided by SOFCpower were tested under methane steam reforming conditions. The stacks were coupl

Biogas-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology based on Ni-GDC electrolyte-supported cell (ESC) offers a sustainable solution for European farms’ heat and power demands with superior efficiency. However, the understanding of the degradation and recover ...

This study investigates the performance of a standard Ni-YSZ anode supported cell under ethanol steam reforming operating conditions. Therefore, the fuel cell was directly operated with a steam/ethanol mixture (3 to 1 molar). Other gas mixtures were also u ...

High-temperature electrolysis for reducing H2O (and CO2) to H2 (and CO) converts concentrated solar energy into fuels and chemical feedstock. We invented an integrated reactor concept comprising a solar cavity receiver for reactant heating, a solid oxide e ...

The performance of a water electrolyser (WE) depends on several aspects, many of which are located in the powerhouse of the cell, namely, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The anion exchange membrane WE (AEMWE) is a promising technology; however, both ...

Structural stability issues in planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) arise from the mismatch between the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the components. The stress state at operating temperature is the superposition of several contributions, which differ depending on the component. First, the cells undergo residual stresses due to the sintering phase during the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the load applied during the assembly of the stack to ensure the electric contact and flatten the cells
